Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

I'm excited about it, Sanjay and I talk about it a few times a week. They really seem to have done their homework on this one, hopefully I'll get one in the next month to review.

Happy to answer questions, or if its something I don't know I'll point Sanjay over for an answer.

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

ive been trying to figure out what I all get with a factory assembled one?
is it the acrylic frame with all the software/ hardware? or is that extra? single extruder of course.
I got confused looking at the kickstarter page

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

All frames are plywood unless upgraded separately.

7

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

cool.
I think I might get this then
whats downside to plywood?
and when do we get the open source files?

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

Plywood can change shape slightly if humidity changes, acrylic is stable with regard to humidity changes.

They plan to release the files once they start cutting frames. Up until then, there could be small tweaks or changes.

Looks like the only "extra" you get with the factory assembled version is the octopi print server - everything else is an add-on at extra cost.

and yeah, the way they have things listed, it is kind of confusing.
There should be a clear and precise listing of EXACTLY what you get with each reward - frame type, extruder(s), heated bed or not, & any other items that are included at that reward level.

SD4 #1 & #2 - Lawsy carriages, E3D v6, Rumba controller board, mirror bed plate, X motor fan, upgraded PSU & Mica bed heater
SD4 #3 - in the works ~ Folgertech FT-5, rev 1
Printit Industries Beta Tester - Horizon H1

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

so has anyone mentioned or heard if they will articulate a rocking head on the dual head printer, so the non-used extruder doesn't drag?

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

No plans for a rocking head, if properly leveled then it isn't much of a concern. There's actually some patents surrounding rocking heads, so its tricky to implement from a legal perspective.

that's what I was thinking just making sure I was on the right track.

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

Huh, I didn't do much printing this summer as I wanted to spend a lot of time outside and I come back to see this!  Looks like a nice machine.  A couple questions:

Will there be an enclosure kit for it?  It would seem that during design would be the best time to do this.  Even if it is just leaving some holes for door hinges or slots to slide plexiglass into would be nice.  I really want an enclosure for ABS printing and I would also like my next printer to look a little more polished and less hacked together, so it would be an additional selling point if it was easy to enclose.

Any options or plans to include a cyclops/ chimera hot end upgrade on it?

What board is it using?

Since it says it will have autoleveling, is there any back up to prevent slamming the bed into the nozzle in the event of system failure or user screw up?

Also, the heated bed for this thing must be a beast.  Does it use some a relay and a separate AC or DC power supply?

Sorry if some of these have been answered, I'm still going thru the updates on kickstarter.  Can't believe I was this out of the loop for a couple months.

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

No Cyclops/Chimera plans at the moment since those are experimental.

Genuine [s]RAMBo[/s] RUMBA board.

Hasn't been discussed.

Single power supply, no external relay. Proper low Rds MOSFETs can handle dozens of amps of current without breaking a sweat.

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

Thanks for the info.  The bigbox website shows RUMBAs in a couple places, including the main page banner.  So that is been changed to RAMBO?  Both are good boards, just wondering.  Hopefully they will be all caught but on kickstarter orders and selling retail by my birthday in February!

Brain fart, actually a RUMBA. Confirmed with E3D, editing my post.

Re: what do you think of the new BIG BOX from E3D?

I thought of another question.  Many of us solidoodle owners have gone to a direct drive Y motor to combat backlash in the Y belt and the resulting tendancy for infill to not quite meet the perimeters.  I notice that the big box uses belts and pulleys instead of attaching motors directly to the shafts.  How are you combating backlash?  How are the motors tightened against the belts?  Hopefully it is better than just pushing the motor down really hard.  Or are you just choosing high enough components that this will hopefully not be an issue?
