Topic: Extruder picks up print

As the post title says, the extruder on my davinci just picks up my print. I'm using Inland ABS from Micro Center and... well here's the video of my printer doing what it does:

Settings: Davinci 1.0 @ 230C extruder, 90C hotbed, glue sticked and hair sprayed like hell (tried individually and separately).

I'm really confused and don't know what to do. I've checked calibration dozens of times, i've tried all the methods i can of making it stick. I'm printing with XYZ's branded ABS as we speak to see if the issue is the filament itself but am SO LOST. Someone, anyone, please halp.

So the issue didn't occur with the XYZ branded ABS (granted my prints are still trash). Has anyone had any experience with Inland or any ideas on what settings to use?

Try the manual bed leveling method that is stickied at the top of the XYZ section. Don't use the built in method. It sets the height incorrectly.

Also keep an eye on your bed temp and make sure it is staying stable.

Thanks for the reply! So i've manually leveled my bed every time actually, learned that the auto level was no good quite some time ago. I followed the guide stickied as well.

FYI, using repetier.

FYI, using repetier.

Not much left then, maybe confirm your med is holding temp through the print. Also using a cooking (contact) thermometer preferably but an IR will work as well for the bed, verify the bed temp is what it says.

When/If I have that problem it is due to one or both of these problems.
  1) The bed leveling is out of calibration.
  2) The extruder is too close to the print table.

The solution(s) are...
 
  1) Level the bed (the XYZ internal method works fine for me).
  2) Use Simplify 3D software and raise the extruder by 0.2 or 0.3mm

I did a few test runs watching temperatures of the bed after your suggestion and discovered a new problem which might be worth a new thread. Firstly, I checked the temp with a thermometer and was getting the temp (+/- a few degrees) that I had set it too initially but if i set my bed temp to 100C or over, it starts to lose heat. Around the 95C mark it then gives me a "heater decoupled" error and crashed the print. One time, I manually increased the heat to 101C as it was about to fail and the bed heated right up to 101C and maintained it the rest of the print and completed successfully. Would this be a firmware issue? Obviously the bed is capable of such heat and even of maintaining it but it seems to lose connection unless manually "woken up" or something to that effect. See the temp curves below. Attempt 1 and 5 show the falling bed temp. Attempt 4 shows where I manually increased the temp to 101C.

Any thoughts? I'll open a new thread if needed.

Thanks Bruce! Going to have to play with Simply3d once i have some cash to fork over haha. I think I'm going to try to solve the issue with my bed not retaining heat first though hmm

Try printing one of the sample files on the SDcard preferably 2 or 3 as the first one does not run that long. See if the same thing happens. I am trying to rule out a comm issue between the PC and printer here. Next suspect would be your power supply but then manually bumping it up should not have an affect on that.

Sorry for being a noob - when i print the sample nothing heats up (ie extruder and bed). Do I need to manually heat them up prior to testing the sample prints?

For now the cold extruder is just running around.....

It sounds like to me the firmware does not operate the heaters automatically as it should. Those sample files contain gcode in their very beginning that say to heat the bed to 90 and wait till it gets there. Then to heat the extruder to 190 and wait till it get there before doing anything. Seems something in your firmware is messed up where it ignores the wait and just starts printing and never even heats.

That would be the same thing happening in your normal prints. You are preheating but once the print starts and the firmware should take over and control the heaters it is actually turning them off until your turn them back on by bumping up the temp.

I am assuming that since you are changing temps you are also running Repetier firmware? I don't recall you ever saying.

I understand what you're saying. I'll go ahead and reflash either tonight or tomorrow and see if that helps. You are absolutely awesome! I'll try not to get too dependent on you big_smile

Then that leaves something in your slicer or host settings. Do you have the ability to print from an SDcard?
