How big are you talking about altering the winder to go?

This is the size spool I use (I'm using the winder as the spool holder as well, I just move the motor up and print from it). You can compare it to the size of the DaVinci spool that I took out of the cartridge that is next to it in the photo. I tried a larger spool that that, but it wouldn't wind evenly. I mainly print in natural ABS, so it saves me time to just keep the giant spool and print most things directly from it without taking it off the winder.

You should be able to fit a 6" wide spool on it.  That was the kind Solidoodle used to sell at the time I started this.  If you need a taller spool, you could try editing the STL of the printed version here- http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:200577
