Topic: First few layers filament pushes back on extruder stepper motor

Ok, I have the E3D v6 and the Neustruder extruder.  I'm running the XYZ Open Mod with Slic3r.  When I print anything, the first few layers seem to back up and push back on the stepper motor, causing it to jump back.  If I don't sit there and periodically push the filament a little bit, it will end up chewing the filament and stops extruding.  After it starts the infill and perimeters, everything prints all the way to the end beautifully without my intervention.

-I have checked the bed calibration and the nozzle is NOT too close to the glass.
-I am using the stock drive gear so I shouldn't have to adjust any steps/second.
-I have increased print temperature with no noticeable difference.
-I have looked through all settings in Slic3r and can't find anything that might solve the problem.

I'm going to try the Repetier Host/Firmware combo on my new computer and see if that helps.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What size nozzle is on your V6??

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

My E3D v6 nozzle is .4

How did you connect your thermistor? I assum you are using the one that came with V6? Did you just splice it to the stock wires? Get a digital cooking thermometer and measure the actual heater block near the thermistor.

The stock thermistor is not a standard 100K. There is a resistor on the mainboard that modifies the output of the stock thermistor as well. If you did not stay with the stock thermistor then you are using the wrong temperature tables and your actual temp is not the set temp. There is no way to mod t he temp tables without flashing the firmware.

I was able to use the stock thermistor.  I just this moment finished upgrading to the Repetier FW/Host and am testing it.  Hopefully it was just an issue with software(I realized somehow the software got upgraded to the latest XYZ release and could have been causing issues with the OpenMod).  I hope this fixes it.

Finally got Repetier Host/FW loaded and running beautifully.  Still having a slight problem with the extruder stepper motor skipping every once in a while, but isn't affecting quality that I have noticed.  Everything is printing perfect now.

Re: First few layers filament pushes back on extruder stepper motor

The Neustruder extruder is using a mk8 gear which I don't think is the same gear in the Da Vinci.
did you reuse the Da Vinci gear? if so that may be why your getting the clicking.

I did reuse the xyz drive gear.  I have a Mk8 gear laying around, just haven't gotten around to installing it yet.  I had to modify a printed "gear puller" to get the stock gear to come off.  I will try that this weekend.

Re: First few layers filament pushes back on extruder stepper motor

Remember to modify your steps per mm on the extruder in the firmware to account for the different diameter of the new gear if you install it. Otherwise you will be over/under extruding depending on which deviation the new gear is from the stock gear.
