Topic: how to move off plate for filament change

When I pause to change filament, I'd like to move the nozzle off the plate so the filament I flush drops to the side.  Is there a command to override the software limits preventing this.  Mechanically there is room.  I am using Marlin firmware and Repetier Host.

You are referring to "Dump area"?
When X is home against the switch the nozzle is past the edge of the bed?
Then most of this can be done through manipulation of the printer dimensions.

never knew you could home head mid print then resume after filament change.

all I been able to click for commands mid print is Pause, kill job, and emergency stop. and only Pause dont clear print job. but still cant use most command buttons in middle of print job. even if you happen to bump anything while swapping filament it gets lost on location and cant finish job correctly. plus hot end melts model when stationary  as it keeps heat on

Re: how to move off plate for filament change

In Repetier Host it says that when you pause a print you can still move and home the print head. You can then change the filament, and when you resume the print it will go back to where it was. I would make sure you fully flush the head, and give the new filament a few minutes to heat up to make sure it flows smoothly.

Additionally, this is something I have found very useful in Slic3r. You can go layer by layer through your print, and pick the exact point you want to change filament. You can go to the g-code, and go to the end of that layer.  Add an @pause. At this point, you can pick the "run on pause" option. Then you can either set coordinates (ie. x200 y200 z15) or send it to home when it hits that @pause or anytime you pause your print.

Re: how to move off plate for filament change

I've never tried homing (G28 X0 Y0) (would be worried that it ends up slightly off due to temperature changes, etc.) but I do regularly move the print head around while paused using the arrows and using one of the scripts to move it to an easy to reach spot but cannot move off bed.  Is there a way without homing?  Of course, I can tell it that the print area is bigger that it really is, but I have mine pretty well tuned so once RH says it fits, it fits.  I'd rather not give that up.
