Topic: how does repetier make this thing so quiet?

so I finally flashed my 1.0 and changed it over to repetier, after spending my morning getting the thing all dialed back in I now have to come back in the room every now and then to make sure its still running.  not that this is a problem but I used to be able to hear it 2 rooms away, now it is pretty quiet even in the same room.  How does just software do that?

The stock controller uses digital current control. By default the stock firmware is pushing way too much current to the motors and over driving them. Repetier has the current by default set lower and closer to where it should be.

that is way to cool, unintended side effect but it will make the wife happy...

I think what Carl says is hitting the nail on the head. Also, what slicer are you  using in repetier , cura, slic3r, or other? I am curious because each method to print seems different in the application creating the code to print. Example, slice the same object in each slicer and watch the print, each has its own method to deliver the same pattern in its own way.In my limited understanding, a print can zag a hex as efficient as a calc, or go creating the same hex smooth by what a human would draw.
