Topic: X Sensor Problem

I have a Davanci 1.0a that ran for 300+ hours without a single calibration (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0_LYg … VbhuBpPmgg) until I made the stupid mistake of upgrading to firmware to the newest firmware last week.
Apparently that firmware affects the z-axis in such a way that the extruder was too close to the glass. Tried the paper calibration method, and the printer then worked fine with XYXWare but not S3D. S3D ground the extruder across the build plate, while XYZWare printed fine.
Enter stupid mistake number two _ I ran the on-board calibration.
I assume that since I had never calibrated before that the machine had never had reason to move to the extreme back-left/front-left corners, that this calibration either damaged something or cause a previously unknown flaw to come to light.
Here's what I'm experiencing now:
The extruder seems unable to locate and return to x axis home position - attempts to home x axis result in extruder moving 1o mm or so to the left each time a x axis home command is issued. In addition, when calibrating extruder the head will stop on the left-rear corner and on subsequent calibration attempts (at which point the extruder should return home to re-start the calibration routine) the extruder will grind against the left x-axis/rail end-stop instead of moving to the right and returrning to the x-axis home position.
My first thought was that the firmware was the problem, so I successfully upgraded to Repetier .92 _ which, now that I've had a chance to play with, wish I had done a long, long time ago. This made no difference, which would seem to point to a hardware issue.
I've field-stripped the cabinet (for easier access to the wiring), un-zipped tied the cables on the side, and removed the wire loom on the left side. The cables appear a little bent, but not broken or crushed.
What's the next step to troubleshoot this problem?

UPDATE
Ok, swapped the top door optical sensor with the x-axis optical sensor _ made no change. Repetier is reporting X position as -33.00 mm. Each time I tell it to Home X it moves 10 mm or so left, but the displayed x-axis location does not change and stays steady @ -33.00 mm.

Re: X Sensor Problem

hi john,

to me it sound like one of the sensor cables is broken.. try to swap the x sensor cable (red?) with top do sensor cable (blue?) and see if that solves the problem...

also maybe there is some info here: http://www.soliforum.com/topic/11545/ne … f-machine/

Re: X Sensor Problem

John,

Was having nearly an identical issue (print head was homing properly most of the time, at random would indicate x-home and would shift left), was about to come on here and post when i saw your post. Replaced the red wire with the blue wire, problem seems to be solved.

Would recommend Cura as a slicer. Its less noob-friendly, but gives you a LOT of options that work wonders with fine tuning and improoved print quality, such as brim, easy detached supports, etc. It also can work with your printer, as the Da Vinci doesnt appear to be supported by S3d.

Its not supported if you are running the very latest firmware. Yet another reason not to update and to have their garbage ware firewalled.

XYZ will do everything in their power to keep you roped into their software and filament. The best thing you can do is flash to Repetier then run any host/slicer you want and use any brand filament you want.

Re: X Sensor Problem

Try another firmware and make calibration again. You can consider exchanging the hardware after rule out the error of the software.

A Da Vinci runs on custom firmware. You can't just try another version.  He will also void his warranty if he was to flash to Repetier which is possible. But that is the only other firmware besides stock that will work on a Da Vinci printer.

So if he plans to try a warranty claim then he will not be able to flash and confirm it is firmware or not.. I highly doubt it is firmware. These machines are notorious for bad wiring. IF YOU ARE SELLING ANY AT THE SITE IN YOUR ILLEGAL SIGNATURE I WOULD ADVISE YOU NOT TO SELL THEM UNLESS YOU OFFER SUPPORT WITH PARTS AS WELL. OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE MANY MAD CUSTOMERS AND HORRIBLE REPUTATION.

Not sure if you are talking about S3d or Cura, as Cura recently changed versions (15.06.1) and removed the ability to use non-ultimaker printers. Also have little experience with s3d, just never heard of them.
