Topic: Printing hollow half sphere curling?

I have an object I designed that is basically a funky hollow half sphere except when I tried printing it a short time ago the inner part of the first layer started curling majorly right away. I print on glass using aqua net and don't usually have curling issues but did with this object. However in this case I sprayed the glass 4 or so hours before I printed and kept it hot till I got home. Might that have been the issue? Or more likely a shape with a thick rim but hollow area inside of it?

Keeping a bed hot or a printer on when your not around is asking to have your house burnt down..

But on topic yes you could all the sticky properties out of the hairspray.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Printing hollow half sphere curling?

one way to find out - clean off the glass, do a fresh application of the hairspray and try it again...

if you still get curling you may want to slow things down a little

Also, if you are using slic3r, uncheck the "detect bridging perimeters" check-box...

I had a heavily curved (at the bottom) cylinder I was trying to print and had curling issues with it. the base was a straight cylinder for about 6-8 layers, then it spread out and curved upwards - the spreading and curving parts would curl inwards creating a very rough, uneven surface because the printer was trying to print that section way too fast - unchecking that box made a HUGE difference in my print.

Until I see what you're trying to print and in what orientation all I can do is speculate. Please provide an STL and your slicer settings.

The item I'm working on is one I made myself and would like to be the first to put it on thingiverse so understand that I don't wish to share it yet. Just know it's a hollow dome with the plastic curling on the inner part of the circle. The perimeter is rough however.

I cleaned the glass and put down a new layer of aqua net and used it right away and the results were the same. I have to conclude two things now. Either the object or the plastic. I was using a brown octave abs. When I feed it through it has small curly waves when it comes out. I will attempt the print again with white abs which comes through very smoothly. I hope that solves it

I'll need a picture... or something. of the sliced gcode and the results. also you can post STLs here, you don't have to use Thingiverse. click the "Choose File" button

He is worried somebody will make it and post it before he does. I think he is worried someone may take credit for his design. To bad he has such little faith in the community here. Can't really help a person if they are not willing to allow other to test the STL for possible issues.

I have faith in you Carl. lol. I just don't make much from scratch and would like to make it count.

It turned out well albeit the walls were too thin. I guess it was he brown filament that was the problem.

It may be the people here that participate regularly wont steal his idea, but I had a design stolen from on an RC site by someone that wasn't a regular.. 2 days after I posted a picture of the printed item, it showed up on thingiverse - granted, not modeled as well, but the design was definitely a copy of mine. So, no, I don't blame Rocketman one bit for not wanting to share just yet.

All true, that's why we have PM and forum mail.  Send the files to one or two users you trust.  It is so much easier to troubleshoot with a little help.  I know several users here that have earned the trust of all of us and they would be more than happy to help.

Re: Printing hollow half sphere curling?

I've heard things to the affect of Makerbot stealing designs through thingiverse so perhaps nothing is safe since copyrights and patents are for the rich man. lol.

Re: Printing hollow half sphere curling?

Man,  If I had to worry about someone stealing my ideas and passing them off as their own, I'd be a mental wreck.  Tell me how many people have now used my idea of the "Z" well nut and passed it off as their own?

I post my stuff here in the knowledge that if someone can use use it, then I happy for them.  If they wan to pass it as their own, so be it, I know who's idea it was, and the posts here can track it back to its origins if need be.

As for Thingiverse, I don't use it myself, and I don't post my things there.  I'm a Solidoodle user, so I'll post my stuff here, where the Solidoodle users are.

Re: Printing hollow half sphere curling?

Well said, I hope (as a huge well nut fan) that I never left the impression it was my idea.
I most certainly know who's great idea it was.
Same goes for glass and hairspray, thanks to Ian for the idea.
And how many times have we tweaked lawsy's designs so a big thanks to him.
If we had to constantly worry about our ideas being stolen then why hang out in a community founded on open source.

I wasn't referring to anyone here in particular, but I've seen the idea in use on some other forums

Anyway, what Ward said about open source community, is what this forum, this community and this hobby in general is about: sharing and in the process helping one another.

Re: Printing hollow half sphere curling?

Is there a website for Solidoodle user designs or just thingiverse for Makerbot and a bunch of pay sites?

Have a look at:
pinshape.com
youmagine.com

Solidoodle started solidoodles.com, but AFAIK it hasn't gained the necessary traction.
