Topic: LCD screen dead

I bought a used da vinci and the LCD screen is dead. The cable to the screen is good. I know it's the LCD because I tested it on my new da vinci and it only lights up. No graphics. Sometimes it shows 2 or 3 dots on the screen but they go away after a short time. Any ideas what I can replace it with?

Re: LCD screen dead

Checked with xyzprinting and they do not seem like they are going to be much help replacing the screen. Now I am thinking of replacing the screen with a rerap discount one and replacing the main board with a ramps 1.4 board.

I wonder if anyone has any idea if the da vinci optical limit switches will work on the ramps 1.4 board?

Re: LCD screen dead

I'm a noob here but I'm pretty sure the RAMPS 1.4 board would be a step down in terms of hardware.  The RAMPS board uses a Mega 2560 versus the SAM3X8E ARM Cortex-M3 in the XYZPrinting/Arduino Due motherboard.

If it were me, I'd jump over to Repetier firmware and swap in a larger LCD. Finding a suitable replacement shouldn't be too hard and it should be fairly straightforward to tweak the Repetier firmware to utilize the larger display.

Or maybe a Smoothieboard...

It may be a step down but it is fast enough to run all kinds of printers. I think it would be worth any trade offs for the ease of making repairs and adding upgrades.

Re: LCD screen dead

How about just loading Repetier on it and run with that? You don't really need the LCD to set up or run the printer with Repetier Host.

I'm just trying to get my head wrapped around the idea of ditching what is essentially a perfectly good (and flexible) RepRap Duet compatible board.

Anyway, it sounds like a good hot rod project. Have fun and good luck.

Re: LCD screen dead

Probably the biggest reason is because I really like using the LCD and running from an SD card on my other printers. If I had a connector that would adapt a simple LCD like the reprap discount one to the da Vinci I would keep the original board.

Re: LCD screen dead

You cant run from SD with davinci can you? At the very least the sd card is difficult to access (Although you could use something like this - http://amzn.to/1LVKprM ). That said I hate SD printing. I  have a dedicated PC and like to restart and tweak too much.

I do have a 1.0 modded with an E3D that the board just bit the dust, though, so I'm considering putting a mega+ramps 1.4 w/marlin.
No light/text on the LCD, but I think the whole board is dead (not the PSU, just hot-wired an ATX PSU to test) a few red lights blip on when I switch on the power, but that's it.

It would have to be more than just an adapter as the data sent to the LCD in a Da vinci is in a different format and a different protocol is used.

As for printing from the SD card, it is possible with a stock machine. You simply need an extension cable for the card which puts the card inside the print area for access. You would then need to modify the gcode file with the proper header and swap all the the G1 entries for G0 which is easy with notepad++. The put the file on the sdcard and rename it sample0. You can then print it like one of the sample files from the the LCD menu.

This was how many of us modified print and bed temps in the beginning so we could use other brand filaments as when a sample file is printed it did not count against your filament use. This was only on older firmware though. Newer firmware will still ding you for use even on samples.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
