Well the calculations came out to about 0.9 mm for 5 lbs on a 500mm of 20x20mm extrusion. The 20x40mm was only a 0.15 mm flex. I highly doubt I'll see those forces printing. I'll crunch some numbers to see what it would generate at speed.

I was going to use their delrin solid v wheels, although I'm still debating on using the extreme wheels. With how light everything is going to be though i don't see the regular wheels causing any problems.

I've been following your work as well! Beautifully done machining and designs! I would love to go that route myself but no access to the equipment yet.

I would say that 20x20 extrusion won't flex 1mm with 5lbs weight on it.. It's really stiff material!

Are you going to use plastic or metal wheels on this? Because if you have coated extrusion, metal wheels wear out the coating pretty fast. Especially if rails have some misalignment. Plastic wheels instead gives pretty much flexing to whole thing!

Nice desing though! If you are interested, you can check my build with opebuilds also: http://www.soliforum.com/topic/7531/diy … -2/page/4/

Don't give me too much credit, i got the steppers and the extrusion from the resources off openbuilds. But I'm glad they are there, it saves quite a bit of time just being able to import and align a few things.

Either way, thanks for the kind words!

1.) You haven't quantified "a large span".
2.) There's no reason to guess. You can calculate it yourself from the moment of inertia, or use an online calculator if you are particularly unmotivated.

For the x axis, i was planning on using the 20x20mm vslot extrusion. With such a large span, do you guys think it would hold up without flexing in any direction?

I was going that size to keep weight down, but if anyone who has used something similar knows for sure i would be very grateful! To be on the safe side I'll probably change to the 20x40mm anyway.

I've hinted here and there that I've been planning a large format build. I'm going with the Core XY design, which keeps all the motors stationary. I'm sourcing lots of the structural parts from openbuilds, their v slot will allow me to use the frame itself as linear guides.

Recently i started modeling up the design in fusion 360, which is a wonderfully powerful tool that i highly recommend. This is another reason i like open builds is that almost all of their products are already uploaded for CAD work, so you can spend time with the design and not making these parts from scratch.

I'll be posting here as the design progresses. In another day or two i will have the first pictures of the frame with the x and y axis draw up.
