I found this on thingiverse that looks like a really nifty way to mount a new mat. (comes with integrated bed clips and everythign)  It does add significant width to your print bed so I'm guessing modifying the z stop screw mount will also be required.

You do have to drill (and tap?) 4 small holes in the corner of your aluminum bed.  This is probably best done by removing it from solidoodle to prevent mishaps to electronics and stuff.  I wouldn't think these holes would affect the original build platform much if you decide this route is not for you.

I was planning on using this (or remixing it a bit) for when/if i upgrade my print bed.  I was also planning on leaving the original elements in place on the aluminum bed in case i feel like reverting to stock.   I've not tore things apart yet so I'm not sure if that will be possible

that heater says 150mmx150mm 180watt so cant fit to an SD2 since it has no holes for the 3 screws that level bed. maybe an SD3 200mmx200mm with outer edges 25mm unheated

macguyverx made a mod to his Press which I believe you could mimic for the SD2.  Uses relatively conventional components...

not sure what has been done as I am not familiar with the press but looks like its built dif from SD2 with Z motor at top and SD2 has other parts already in that spot so without complete redesign and lots of metal work not feasible.

the SD2,3,4 had bed leveling screws in tripod configuration making most PCB/silicone heaters not work as they use the 4 outer corners for screw holes instead. a few made custom  fit for the early SD printers using relay for extra power but they are sold out since models discontinued. I have emailed the current silicone maker to see if they can make a version with the 3 SD holes. they are looking into it so who knows. I prefer silicone to PCB as it can take higher temp plastic for long print times better with exotic filaments. though may not need to, still more durable. and glass build plate is now standard and silicone transfers better to glass than PCB does.

thats the support for bed. its no longer available. the bed/build plate is the heated Aluminum one I was saying comes with the newer silicone heater and thermister which they also sell seperate on their page (if anything they list is really still available) also check their shipping costs they used to be high.

if you dont have a heated aluminum bed then yes, and it comes with better heater and thermister now. wish they still offered the aluminum support for bed to replace the wood one. I have one and Azzerate does. he was gonna have more made since SD discontinued all SD2 and SD3 specific parts. these where their best printers b4 they went to SD4 and the others. cant understand why their site offers the SD4 at higher cost than Aprentice wonder if they stock any of the current printers.
