Even if I couldn't prove it was bad for a particular print, that extra stress couldn't be good for the belts, frame, wires/connectors, bed, or other mechanical parts.

Following some general tips from teh net, went into Slic3r>Print Settings>Speed>Acceleration Control (advanced)
and reduced all the settings from some huge number to 1000 mm/s^2.

Now the massive shaking is gone, printer is much quieter, and I'm pretty sure it will last longer. No change to prints, and print time doesn't seem to have noticeably increased. Happy.
