Solidoodle Press - Should I bother raising from the dead in 2022?

Hi. I see that nobody has posted in the Solidoodle Press subforum for a few years so I might not get any replies but I'll give it a shot...

So I got a Press when they first came out and had the same problems most people had... I guess maybe slightly better results than some, but I still had lots of prints that went wrong before they finished up, I never could get it to print PLA, and I recall trying to print a few marble-run pieces for my daughter that always ended up warped. I didn't have any real NEED for a 3D printer, it was just a novelty and learning opportunity, and after messing around with it for a while I just shelved it and went on to other things.

This year my daughter, now much older, is involved in a rocketry club with some of her friends at school and I thought I might break out the Press and see if I could get it working at all in case they wanted to print a few parts. My question to whomever might still be around is, should I bother? Did the community ever work out "best practices" tweaks to improve performance, and are there any upgrades I should make that are worth the money vs. just putting that towards another printer? I'm definitely trying to read through the forum and see how things evolved but I've got several years worth of things to go through so I thought I'd toss this out and see if anyone had any thoughts. Is replacing the hot end and/or extruder a no brainer in 2022? Any software I should look into besides the old soliprint program? Chuck the whole thing and move on? I'd like to get some use out of it but man it was frustrating back then.

Press no longer centering correctly to start print (auto-leveling?)

I had my press working for a while, but got busy with other things and it sat dormant.

Got it out, printed a few things with success, and then something went wrong.

First issue was a shorted thermistor, which I've gotten sorted.

The second issue seems to be an issue during the auto-leveling,
where it is only using the left ~75% of the bed, and then grinds on the X-axis when it goes to retract the Z-probe.

If I cleanly reboot the printer, connect with repitier host - all 3 axis home like I would expect, and I can jog all 3 axis with what I would expect.

If I babysit the print, and pull the head toward the center of the X-axis before it lays down the first layer - I can make it through the full print without issue.

I feel like I'm missing something....

Has anyone actually gotten a Press to work?

Has anyone actually gotten a press to work with minimal tweaks? Some belt tension here, some better spool feeding there? No major reworks? Curious.

Missing screws/ hardware

Hello, does anyone have the specs for the missing screws/bolts for the bottom of the z axis rails, and the 2 under the bed that are missing? I'm going to try and find what type of screw/bolt they are but figured i would ask before I wasted time.

Assuming I can get the bed level, whats the best way to turn off the auto bed leveling macro and just operate like solidoodle 2's and 3's?

Hi, So my press never really worked. Its sat in my garage for years while my other printers pick up the work load. Its basically stock. Is there a definitive guide out there for how to make this a working printer both software and hardware wise in a post solidoodle world? It really bothers me that it was never useful.... and i don't want to die knowing i was bested by a machine.... help me cross this off my bucket list lol

Replacing the extruder

The extruder of my press finally went and I guess replacing it with original parts is out of the question at this point.

Has anyone figured out any alternatives? if so, any tutorials?

I am not new to 3d printing. I have been doing this now as a hobby for about 4 years. I bought a Press off ebay. This is my 3rd 3d printer in fact. Anyways, it has been several days since it has arrived, but I will be damned if I can get any of my computers to see it after plugging it into various usb ports. I have tried various software packages in addition to Soliprint, FTDI drivers, Windows update, etc. Not even a noise to indicate that it has connected.

And all I get is a flashing green light on top. Does anyone know whats going on? I am thinking the board is dead.

Part fan for a Press with the E3Dv6 Bowden mod

I replaced my hotend with the E3Dv6 and did the PEI heated bed upgrade from the classic instructions from MacGyverX thread. The Press is no longer my main printer but I'd still like to get good parts out of it. I'm printing on it now with PLA for the first time and it looks like it could do a good job if I added a part fan.

Doing the design from scratch is a pretty daunting task. I'm looking at the one on my i3 MK2 and it seems like maybe a variation on that would fit. Has anyone else built something to fit in this kind of space? I'm not sure exactly what'll be involved.

SD Press motherboard caput

Hello all

After about almost a year of solid printing the mainboard on this thing went caput.

Also, I've looked through some threads and it looks like there are no alternatives that will work out of the box (meaning they'll require a significant amount of troubleshooting)

After all the mods already in this guy, I really would like just a replacement board

Any idea where I can find a replacement motherboard for this little guy?

Edit: nvm, power supply is fine. Board is dead. RIP.

Hi guys, my 1st post here.. having a nightmare with the slic3r settings on my solidoodle press....

I'm using soliprint and trying to print something that has a 45 degree angle (see pic below), but nothing I do will get the support pillars to generate!(slic3r settings are also below.)

Does anyone have a clue for me? Many thanks in advance

I'm finally at the point where I can replace the Z carriage bracket with a Openbuilds V Slot Linear extrude and all the other bits with it I previously posted about here http://www.soliforum.com/topic/13754/bed-bounces/ and while tearing it down I've come to a halt. I have both side panels removed, the door removed, and I can't get to the Barton screws for the front and rear panel from the inner frame. I thought if I spaced the top of both the front and rear panel i could slide it out, but it's not really working and I don't want to force it and break something in the process. I've scanned all over and not sure what else I'm missing in order to get to the Z carriage bracket or removing the entire inner frame but the pic below is where I'm at so far.

Anyone else who has torn their Press down please let me know what I'm missing, thank you.

Press Extruder FAN 12v??

I know the Press is 24v but why and how is the fan on the extruder 12v? I ask because i'm ordering a e3d kit mainly because I need the 24v components since I already have 12v parts that aren't supposed to work?

Hotend Heatbreak problems

So I just got a used Press and most of it seems fine except for the fact when ever I push filament through eventually it gets too hot in the heatbreak that I can't push anymore. Is there something I'm missing to the heatbreak like is there any teflon or any way to fix this?
