Can you elaborate on "not printing". Do you mean the printer does not move (non responsive)?

I used to print using Simplify3D with my Solidoodle 3.

For some reason now, I'm able to manually control the 3d printer but it doesn't start printing
as soon as I start a print. Any ideas?

Well, I'm also a Simplify3D customer (on a SD2) since around 2 months and I haven't looked back since.

I also think supports are one big reason to buy it, but it's not perfect yet, I wish they put the option to define the amount of separation between model and support in mm rather than layers, I never tried PLA but with ABS 0 is too little and 1 is too much, especially with relatively "big" layer heights like 0.3mm

Also if you haven't tried it yet you should experiment with different "processes" on a single model, in a Yoda for instance you can have a low infill in the bottom and middle of the print, but at the top you can increase it to make sure there's no holes. Or even the other way around to make any model bottom heavy so that is more stable.

Then you can change things like temperature, speed, perimeters, top/bottom layers etc. It takes a bit longer to prepare the slice this way, but you end up with the best of both worlds: quality and speed/less material.

Currently my heated bed is stock with glass added on top. I do have plans to upgrade it with this :www.soliforum.com/topic/168/silicon-rub … -1-minute/ I have the parts on hand but hate to mess with a working machine. Once I get my Workbench in, i plan on doing massive upgrades to my SD2 that i've been too scared to do since it would mean my printer would be down.

Question wire10ga, as a fellow SD2 user, do you have a heated glass bed? Did you modify the heated bed assembly given by Soildoodle or did you make your own?

Yeah I really like the software as well. Best part for me is being able to put support wherever i want without having to edit the stl file.

I was very apprehensive at first when I hear about Simplify3D. So many claims and then add that it isn't free. I was quite happy with the repetier host / slic3r combo as a free alternative. After much debate and review and back and forth questions with Simplify3D (by the way very responsive and helpful) I decided to buy it.
My first print, a yoda bust, out of the box, with just adjusting the temps for the PLA filament that I purchased, was a complete success.
Just the support generator and the fact you can manually edit the supports is worth the money.
Its is hard to knock or compare a free software like Sli3r, since it in its own right is great, but I would have never believed at how much a difference it would be.
Just some quick comparisons:

Simplify 3D:
Slice time: 20-30 sec
Print time: .2mm; 2hrs

Repetier Host/Slic3r:
Slice time: 3 mins
Print time: 3hr 6mins

FYI.
The support to the left was my fault, I was messing around the print and knocked over the support! Good thing I got it to stick to the adjacent one!
