To the original poster ;
Looks like we gave you two very different  options. the actual rebuild is likely what you are looking for . the one advantage to the one i posted is you would end up with a little extra Z room  the disadvantage is more likely more mods to your original case. 

Lesson learned check thingiverse  before trying to reinvent the wheel.

the core xy files are available in grabcad

Seems like it would be easy enough to build a core xy frame and set it on top of the sd4 box drill a half dozen 5mm holes and mount it with t nuts  then either use the existing z axis of use the core xy y design
