when I 1st tried setting lighting/exposure the best manual setting I could get with an object in color sitting on turntable was a very dark dim shadow and the same bright lasers at normal room lighting, or completely dark like these pics with room dark, or with bright sunny sky light from window it washed out laser light and had over exposed color view of object etc. I had to make an enclosure with black poster board around scanner leaving top open for room light and set to an auto setting for camera to get perfect view. plus my whole scanner was spray painted flat black to prevent any stray reflections and my poster board also was tall enough to keep laser light from getting out and harming eyes etc. I used my SD2 deluxe case turned upside down and sat scanner in it with turntable hanging out back side and part of scanner out front end then split a full sheet of black poster board in 2 lengthwise and bowed each half just enough to slide ends in both side from each end in a U meeting in middle and propped rear half up just enough to retain laser lines. worked like a professional photo booth with open top.

I think the person in prev topic simply said you guys helped and its fixed is because he figured out his mistake and didnt want to say so. but what I stated still needs adressed or these type topics will keep coming back to haunt us.

also most people new to this tech dont understand they need to either print the calibration item (which often has errors like splits or warped making it useless) or use a strait object that can sit flat on turntable and have a flat 90 degree surface for lasers to shine onto and have the top of the object at proper camera center aim lined up with center of lasers in their mounts. and also a center vertical line to line lasers up with at center of turntable. this info is a bit hard to follow in instructions also.

I use a plastic music box shaped like a large match box with a thin strip of sand cloth on one side (striker like for matches) I use as the center line and the box is just the right height for camera aim, this works perfect for calibration. since my printed item is warped on the side used for that and wont work, also has a split making top uneven. I did not print it, someone else did)

yeah that topic link barely touched on this issue. what the OP is saying and I too had this issue since none of the Atlas instructions tell you that you must twist the lasers so that the line generated by both is vertical.

all instructions just tell you to insert lasers, tighten clamps etc then calibrate. but no place does it say to twist laser to make line vertical as there is no software/calibration that can fix that.

I have seen once where somebody said something about that line can be upside down causing some error, but I dont understand that at all. its not like pos/neg on speaker wires or something its simply a focused beam of light and dont matter which end of line is up. as long as both lasers line are strait up and down B4 moving aim left or right to center on turntable.
