I'll be honest, the cartridges don't 'fit' well into the slot. If you don't insert them just right, they won't make contact and it will not 'see' the cartridge as being installed.
Another tip I might add, is to put a popsicle stick underneath the plastic holder that you use to hold the cartridge into the printer. Why? Sometimes the filament roll inside the cartridge will get caught and get pulled up slightly, causing the cartridge to lose contact with the printer and this will cause the printer to error out and stop your print.
I put a popsicle stick between the cartridge and the plastic holder (on top of the cartridge) and this fixed this issue completely. Since I did this I haven't had a single print stop due to the cartridge becoming slightly dislodged.
But again, you might need to push down a good bit on the cartridge to make it make contact.
EDIT:Also, 'new software' with an 'old cartridge' wouldn't cause this issue on the printer.
