Topic: spring tension for belts

I've built a few CNC DIY projects in the past.  For parts I've harvested quite a few scanners.  One thing stood out  as a commonality with the belt drives.  They all had spring tensioners.  A few had springs in the mount for the idle pulley.  Most of them used a torsion spring similar to a clothes pin.

This isn't a new concept to Reprap.

I found an interesting instructable showing how to make your own.

I had some 3/32 tig wire, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

What do you think?

Re: spring tension for belts

What problem does this solve?  Does it reduce overrun or backlash in the x and y directions?
