Topic: New Printing Film

http://www.buildtak.com/    Found this at The last expo in NYC (http://www.mediabistro.com/inside3dprin … =3dnylpage)  bought some and will be testing for myself.  But what I can say from what I saw when they were using it is it looks like it works great.  Will post followups shortly.

Re: New Printing Film

VERY VERY HAPPY.   Absolutely no problem under standard settings (210 extruder temp and 110 bed temp)  gonna start playing with it and see how good it is.  It was SO easy to install, way easier than kapton.   Although there is a note.   Absolutely no chemical resistance whatsoever!!!    DO NOT USE ACETONE ON THIS!!!!!    IT WILL DESTROY IT after a few cleanings.  Also something I picked up from the guys who made this, an excellent removal tool is an oil paint mixing knife.  All round no sharp edges, plenty of shapes to pick what you feel comfortable with, and can be found at any art store for $4 bucks.   Working great for me, just make a first layer .3 mm on whatever you do.   Anyway, here's the pictures!

Re: New Printing Film

Shucks, I can get a 1 inch cube to stick to just about anything :-). How does it work with something big, like maybe an electrical outlet cover plate? Nice long objects that like to peel up. It would be wonderful if it works for large objects.

Re: New Printing Film

DONT BE MEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!    lol    I'm just starting with it.     Gonna get bigger, just making sure bs prints stick to it and  my model fits together first.   Then I'm going full size of the printing bed.   but if you want an electrical outlet, gimme a pic and ill print it out for ya.   smile

Re: New Printing Film

This is the one that defeated me when I tried to print it: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:74138 (it is also needs support to print right since for some reason the sides don't go all the way down). I can actually get anything to stick to glass these days, but only by printing the first layer slow with a wide brim, and painting the corners (at least) with a 50/50 acetone/MEK solution that has ABS dissolved in it. Then I have to let it cool back down over night to come unstuck. A magic new film surface that could avoid all that nonsense would be a miracle :-).

The individual panels for the sides of the TARDIS I printed ( http://www.thingiverse.com/make:59812 ) were where I finally figured out how to get the corner painting to work. Took several tries to get one side to print without peeling up.

Can't wait to hear how the new film does with large objects.

Re: New Printing Film

I actually got a free Buildtak film in like December and still haven't tried it out. After seeing this post, I may wipe the dust off, grab some glass to experiment with, and see if it's better than my current setup.

I see you just clipped it on. Is this because you are still using the SD stock kapton on aluminum? I know it has an adhesive back. Also, are you able to use this with a heated bed?

no warping at all.  i took a look at both of your thingiverse links .....   and when that 8 hr print is finished ..... CHALENGE ACCEPTED!!!!   lol.    i happen to have a friend and a sister who would love both of those so i can print what i dont want and still get brownie points ... lol.

Azerate - i stuck it to a piece of glass than clipped it to the sd3 aluminum., yes i can use the heated bed and it works great.    gonna try some "just in case throw away prints" and try to print abs with no heat, with this stuff i think it might work, if not work with a lot less heat.  Trials are still to come.

fr333n3rgy - need a reference, i havent eer seen those keyboards.

Re: New Printing Film

I just tried a 7.5" diameter top for a cyclone project... I might have to try this. 10 hours into the print I had warping.... It was painful to watch.

I apologize, i have no idea what that is tonight.     anyway the update.

there was slight warping, although I dont know when it happened, i didnt see it before i went to bed, but there was layer splitting as the model was built, so i think i have some humidity - layer adhesion issues.   but i tried something tonight so i was completely exited about.......

THIS CRAP LETS YOU PRINT ABS WITHOUT HEATED BED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     lol

granted its a really small pin im printing ..... but to date i have never has abs stick with heat, and it suck immediately!.    I swear when thay make a chemical resistant version that i can clean with acetone, this is absolutely the new standard.    not its time to try pla  and see what happens.  Ill have a video tonight or tomorrow.

Re: New Printing Film

I just received mine today. Works pretty well with ABS once I got the level fixed up.

Sticks the same or better as glass with hairspray. Have not tried nylon yet.

Re: New Printing Film

I just used it to print two of these : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:296971

Wow. It works very well. The first of the two flat sides had a tiny lift on one edge, the second had nothing of the sort. That's a bigger part than I can usually do without some sort of lift. Very good product.

Re: New Printing Film

I just posted a review on the PRINTinZ plate. I was impressed, but finally bought so glass yesterday for the sole purpose of having a dedicated BuildTak surface. Once again, I am quite impressed. 5 prints in and not a single sign of lifting.

Don't ask why it took me 6 months to try it out. hmm

BuildTak doesnt do anything special for nylon 618. I was able to print a small dice cube with added gluestick, but anything bigger eventually warped. However, that happens on glass too..

I hope to get some t-glase later and try it. Taulman 618 doesn't work any better or worse than glass or kapton. ABS and PLA are excellent.

Re: New Printing Film

I still await the update. Did the teeny bit of warping stay teeny, or did it keep getting worse during the 8 hour print. That's what I want to see :-).

....... uhhhh ........    lol, it warped a bit.   but to its defense when i first got it i cleaned it with acetone and you ARE NOT supposed to do that.    i think its time to put a new piece on anyway.   ill update again when i make another print that size.  but for the most part it does work a lot better than glass alone or (in my experience) hairspray.   i have had trouble getting some prints off of it in the past.

Re: New Printing Film

If you heat the bed to about 60C, it seems to help with the warping a lot.  I am using it on my delta build.  I decided to use the buildtak because making an enclosure for a 3 foot tall delta seemed like a pain.
You can also use a flat carving tool to remove the printed piece.  I got mine at Michaels.
