Topic: Custom Filament Spool (For drill winding filament)

Hi,

I got this idea from Tim where he said he drill winds the filament (and saw it in one of his videos), but I did not want to use any of my rep-rapper spools as the inner diameter is so small.  I only have 2 empty Makerbot spools (large inner diameter), but I would've needed an adapter or a hack job to attach it to a drill!

Instead I designed this, 6 printed parts, 4" x 5/16" carriage bolt (nut & washer), #6 5/8" counterhead screws and some cardboard (must be quite stiff).  I wound 1092g of filament on it and it works very well.  Of course the core/washers are re-usable for each spool you make, as they are only required to spool the filament on.

Inner mount hole is the same as rep-rapper spools (32mm)

Re: Custom Filament Spool (For drill winding filament)

and how do you mount it on your drill?
I'd like to see a video of it in action or at least some pictures.

It's mounted via the core-washers.stl and the 5/16" x 4" carriage bolt, nut, washer.  Sorry I do not have a video, but I would say Tim's estimate is correct, it's very quick!

My filament was in a large pile (in a round circle), I was about 20' away so I could see any kinks coming (there were none).  I ran the drill in reverse so the nut/bolt did not loosen and fired it up.  I also used a cloth to remove any dust when winding it up.
