Topic: I think it broke

Hey fellows,

I just got my printer today. I wanted to start it up. Fist, Skeinforge didn't work at all. Well, shit happens (something about the TKIP Interface,.. didn't work, even after downloading some suggested packages).

But.. now my biggest Problem. There was some filament stuck inside the extruder. After heating, I reversed, nothing happend. Actually,... the wheel turned a little bit and then stood still, combined with an unhealthy sound. The filament broke at the height of the extruder wheel, and now it's stuck.

Please don't tell me I will have to disassemble the whole head?
How broken is it? I mean the stepper motor can't turn.

@Support... please consider NOT PUTTING FILMAENT INTO THE MACHINE...

Ps: I'm completly disappointed. This wasn't what I espected. I did everything exactly according to the online manual,.. and not a single thing (except the Printer Interface) worked.

Do I have to disassemble the complete head?

Edit: I found out: The spring screw could be set to stiff. I unscrewed it a little. But it didn't help at all. The extruder wheel won't turn anymore. DAAAAAAAAMN...

Take off the spring and nut so you can pull the arm open, then see if you can pull the top part of the filament out.  The part that is partially in the hot end won't come out until you heat it up.    See if you can reach it with some tweezers to pull it out.

Re: I think it broke

I pulled it out. It was too late. The wheel won't turn anymore. Great. Where can I get a replacement part? (Yehaw....)

The motor is kind of turning. But extremly slow. The first time i started the printer, it turned a lot faster... please somebody tell me the extruding speed is only set to a frew mm/min.

Edit: Nope it's broken.

Re: I think it broke

One more thing to try is resetting it.  Hit the little button near the top of the electronics.  I've sometimes had the motion act weird due to a bug somewhere.  Do the other motors work right?  The extruder speed default is 300 in Pronterface.

It extrudes like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3yo3kk73bhu88 … .45.42.mp4

I don't know if it's normal,... but it seems to extrude really really slow.

Re: I think it broke

That's good! What speed are you set to in printerface? Could you post a screenshot?

Re: I think it broke

Where it says 1 mm/min, change that to 300.  It looks like a field for Reverse, but it isn't, it's just next to the Reverse button.

Re: I think it broke

I couldn't find the speed in the interface. The "e_feedrate" value was set @ 1. So I changed it to 300. Now everything works fine. I'm printing allready. This little machine rocks!

It's sounds like you have some kind of grinding, does anyone else hear it.  I'm using a tiny speaker at work and don't want to crank it...

Re: I think it broke

The problem was solved. If the stepper is blocked, the internal settings for the extruder will be set to 1 mm. The number you are writing directly into the menue (see elmorets picture) will only define how much filament will be put through the extruder. Not how fast.  If you click on options, the value is called: e_feedrate .... this has to be @ 300,... after the motor was blocked, this value will be set to 1.

Kind of intelligent behavior... now everybody knows ^^

Re: I think it broke

What I believe you hear as grinding is the filament slapping on top of the case. When I first put my case on after printing for a while, I noticed the same sound. I tracked it down to the filament dragging across the top of the case.

This is not possible.

Re: I think it broke

I agree, the stepper motors offer no feedback to the firmware. At some stage the value has been accidentally set to 1.
