Topic: New SLA Printer MonoPrice

So FormLabs has released the Form 3, a  $3500 printer, so I figured I'd check to see what's out there, and came across this cool little printer from MonoPrice, called the MP Mini SLA, and it sells for $200

On Wednesday, I went to the local Casino, and came back with a slight surplus of cash, so what better way to use it than to buy a new printer.

The printer came in next day, and I've been playing around with, and to be sure it needs some work, but I think it's going to be fun.

The first print was one of those load file and hit print kind of thing.  For a first test, uncalibrated, just fill the tray and press print, it was successful. It took 8:10 hours to print, which is a loooong time for a 1200 layer print, but that’s because of the out-of-box settings which I think were wrong.

The resin that was included with the printer was clear, and the print came out a bit on the yellowish side, so I think that the exposure time was to high. Also, this type of resin is much more susceptible to UV than the stuff for Formlabs printers.  I put it in a window to cure further and left it for about 30 minutes. When I got back to it, it was overcured, a pretty deep amber color, and removing the print from the supports by hand, was nearly impossible. I had to use a wire cutter to cut every one of them off. Very strong stuff.

BUT, there’s a big problem: There are a whole bunch of lines in the print as if it had either shifted or over cured a some layers. It’s not apparent at the lower layers, but it’s immediately apparent at the higher ones. Don’t yet know what it is, but I’ll see if I can figure it out.

Monoprice makes 3 different slicers available, Slic3r for SLA (which is a customized version of the Prusa 3D Slic3r, ChiTu Box, and Creation Workshop.

The software I really like is Slic3r.  I'm not a big fan of either the Creation Workshop or ChiTu.

One more thing, the printer is a re-badged version of the Malyan S100.

pretty much all Monoprice printers are rebadged - most being of the Malyan family
and they are currently out of stock. hmm

SD4 #1 & #2 - Lawsy carriages, E3D v6, Rumba controller board, mirror bed plate, X motor fan, upgraded PSU & Mica bed heater
SD4 #3 - in the works ~ Folgertech FT-5, rev 1

It's amazing to see how inexpensive the resin printers have become.  Good job on 'earning' that extra 3D printer money!

Thanks smile

Anyway, For the last coup[le of days I've been fooling around with this thing at work, and I've had a few setbacks.

First of all, I updated the firmware, and as luck would have it, it created problems.  After the update, every print failed in one way or another.  Not only that, but noticed that the prints were taking a very long time, so I started watching it print, and noticed that every layer was taking about 40seconds to print.

for those that are not familiar with DLP/MSLA printer, the first few layers (base layers) have longer exposures (30-40 seconds depending on printer and resin), and subsequent layers have a lot shorted exposures 6-10 seconds.

In this printer's case, the base layers were set to 40 seconds, and the rest were supposed to be 7 seconds.  After the firmware update, all layers were taking 40 seconds.  In fact a print that should have lasted about 5 hours, was still printing the next day some 18 hours later.

Anyway, I re-flashed the firmware, and now it's working OK.  But I ran out the meager sample resin, and bought some Apply Lab Works Modelling Grey for MSLA.

This time the issue is completely different.  Even though the exposure rates for this resin are very similar to the resin from Monoprice, it creates such heavy suction to the FEP, that the print fails.  It's virtually impossible to lift the build platform and separate the print from the FEP, even by hand.

I managed to get one print done, a small one, using supports without the raft, so the contact points were pretty small, but I've got to figure out how to make this work correctly.

Re: New SLA Printer MonoPrice

So I was able to get more information from one of the MP Mini SLA groups on Facebook.  It turns out that this is a common occurrence with certain resins that are more viscous than the stuff from MonoPrice.

What happens, is the bottom FEP itself is touching the LCD screen, and it can create a pretty good vacuum underneath.  When the build platform tries to go up, the FEP has no give/flexibility as its stuck to the LCD screen.  So the trick is to put a few strips of masking tape around the edge of the LCD with the corners open, so to create a thin separation between the FEP and the screen, and also allow the air to escape/breathe by having those open corners.

I'm printing a model right now, and will post some photos once it's done.

Re: New SLA Printer MonoPrice

So here are a a few photos of the print I was running. The first one is the print fresh off the print bed, still wet and on it’s supports.

If you look close, you can see a separation line about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way up, when I pause the print to make sure ti was actually attached to the print bed. That pause and lift left a scar on the print.

The photos below show the model after I removed the supports and cleaned it up a little. The quality and detail are very good for 0.05mm print, and I can go down to 0.025, but this isn’t bad at all. If you look close you can still see a few layer marks here and there, which are due to the coupler between the Z motor and and the threaded rod. I’ll probably replace the couple they have with a flex coupler I have somewhere around here.

Anyway, here is the output of my MP Mini SLA and Apply Lab Works Grey resin, after only about 4 hours of tweaking during my lunch hour.

Re: New SLA Printer MonoPrice

Those look really good!  I've had the suction problem too, whenever I leave the resin in the vat for a few days...I guess some of it evaporates.

I've been using Elegoo resin with my Anycubic Photon with good results.  It's cheaper than Anycubic's branded resin, and WAY less odor.

Re: New SLA Printer MonoPrice

Here is another print I did this past week.

It's another Warhammer 40K miniature. This time, Saint Celestine of the Adeptas Sororitas. This is a more complex print I tried because I'm trying to find the limits of this printer.  This is made up of 4 parts, and they take up most of the print surface.

Originally I was a bit worried about the lack of supports generated around the wings, and the sword blade, but as you can see they printed fine. The only issue is at the bottom of the left wing, the tips of the feathers either broke off, or never printed, although they did have supports. I'm sure I can fix that with some green stuff putty, or simply reprint the wings.

First image is a multi-view of the model still on supports, fresh of the press, and how it looked in Slic3r:

And this is the model after I cleaned most of the supports and assembled it.  As previously mentioned, there are a few issues, the bottom tips of the left wing didn't print, also on the sword ribbon there's supposed to be a rose, and instead there's just a blob.

I may reprint the wing, or just fix it.  Don't know yet.  All in all, not too bad, I think this little thing is a keeper.

Re: New SLA Printer MonoPrice

Update:

Unfortunately, I'm returning the printer.  It's simply too much hassle.  In fact, the prints you see above, are pretty much the only ones that actually worked.  For whatever reason, nearly all subsequent prints failed in one way or another.  No idea why.

I have since tried Monoprice's own resin, without a single successful print, went through nearly half of the Applylabworks bottle with only a few prints to show for, and they're not that good (many lines, soft features, etc).   I also replaced the FEP, with no chnage in results.  I'm not sure if the problem is with the LCD panel or with the UV light source, whatever it is, I'm calling it off.

I may try another MSLA printer in the future, but for now, the Monoprice Mini is going back.
