Topic: Setting up printer for PETG

Ok after printing with ABS and HIPS for several years I am going to try and set up the printer PETG.

Going to Re-calibrate and Print a Calabration Cube.

Thanks
Dale

You should print two or three in a row a few mm apart as you will also have to calibrate speed, temp, and retraction to combat strings. PETG is very sticky when melted and like to string.

I would go with that and see what you get. It's a good starting point. But like I said you need to print like three side by side with about 10mm between them to see how bad your strings are. PETG will string but with proper settings they can almost be eliminated.

PETG requires the same environment as PLA.. A layer fan is actually not advised either but I still use one on small parts. So you should not need to remove doors or panels.

It looks like you are going to be over extruding. Might want to back of on your flow rate or multiplier a little. PETG likes to be under extruded compared to other filaments. Those little blips on the corners are an indicator.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

The Mighty board has the connector for the layer cooling fans so I guess I will print the parts needed and wire it in.
I can see where i could use it on small parts. (most of what I print)

ok attached is the final print. Outside of setting my multiplyer do you see anything else.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

Aside from the few strings looks better than what I am getting right now. If those few strings was all I was getting I would be happy.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

Looking at the top of the cubes they look like they did seal. I can see little holes between extruder lines. Than being said I forgot to measure the diameter of the filament before starting.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

The one other thing about PETG is that it sags. So if you have a very small infill like 20% or less the first few layers can droop down into the openings between the infill. So you might need to increase your top layer count to cover the sagging on low infill items.

Here is a better pic of the top. I printed the cubes  .2mm layer thickness 3 layers top and bottom with 2 shells.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

Yep, one or two more layers would have closed those holes up most likely.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

ok I measured filament dia. lowered the multiplier from .9 to .8
added an other top layer and set the infill to 30%

this evening I will print it again.

Thanks

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

Ok after measuring the filament, changing the Dia. in Semplify 3d adding another top layer and reducing the multiplyer by .1
and upping the infill to 30%i get no stringing

here are some pics
1st & 2nd print are at 80% complete.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

after printing i noticed all four edges on the top of each cube did not laminate with the sides
what do i need to do.
I am thinking I need to set the extrusion multiplier back up to .9

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

That would help and double check your extrusion width is set to .48.

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

Ok I have changed back up to .9 multiplier (where I started). slowed the printer down from 4800 to 4300 mm/min
still showing some gap where the top and sides meet.
the 30mm cube when printed measures 29.69 X 29.6 and 29.66 high
looking close at the corners do I need to slow the printer down more.

Thankd

Re: Setting up printer for PETG

If my math is right you are running 75mm/s. If so that is way too fast and could be part of the problem. PETG should never be run faster than 35mm/s or in your settings it would 2100mm/m.

You are probably stretching the strands si they are not actually in contact with each other as well as they should be. I did tell you it was a slow filament. But with little smell and the finish it gives when set right I can live with slow.

I will slow it down and print another one.

I don't get in a hurry printing. It took me 3 weeks to print the last math spinner!

I slowed it down again and here is what I got.
