Topic: Why does my print Have holes?

I am trying to print a Dual color Cigarette case.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1755794

I am printing with a Makerbot replicator 2X and makerbot desktop
.2 mm layer thickness 3shells  and 30% infill.
the Case is 3mm thick so the inlay is about 1.5mm thick.
I slowed the speed down about 50% and am running a temp of 240°
110°bed temp.

Re: Why does my print Have holes?

Partial clog in red nozzle.
Ether that or bad /wet filament.

Try a calibration with some fresh filament.

Re: Why does my print Have holes?

Looks to me your red filament has moisture in it. That moisture is causing little steam explosions in the hotend which is blowing the filament out in irregular amounts and leaving voids in the feed for a moment. This is also why the red is mixing withe the black on the corner.

Thanks Carl
What is the safest way to dry the filament.
Or do i need to just throw it out and start over.
I have about 6 different rolls that were left out in the laundry room for about 3 weeks
I suspect all of them may have moisture.
Will a moisture meter read how much Moisture is in the roll.

Thanks

Re: Why does my print Have holes?

Unless you have a dehydrator a roll can fit in there really is no safe way to dry them out. It's best to just buy new and not open till needed, or keep stored I an air tight container with dissecant in it.

Unfortunately  Makerbot and stock software will not let you calibrate the extruder all you can do is set filament diameter.

I have Semplify 3D but it slams against the corner when you start a print so i have not done anything with it yet.

You need to add a line to the start script in Simplify3D to raise the nozzle whatever height is needed to clear the side of the bed before the rest of the move commands are done.

This is what my start script looks like.

G28 ; home all axes
G1 Z2 F500 ; position z axis

You could also consider flashing to Sailfish which allows you more fine tune features.

Re: Why does my print Have holes?

If I use a plastic tote with a good lid and put this Dehumidifier
in it will it pull the moisture out of the filament.

Re: Why does my print Have holes?

sorry forgot you have the maker bot.
Food dehydrators are relatively cheap like $50 or you may be able to find one at a thrift store.

fairly easy to modify for 3dp use.

Carl
sorry for not being clear. it is not hitting the bed it is slamming against the wall in the corner when it goes to the corner to to start a print.

I will look into sailfish because the Makerbot  firmware has not been updated for several months.

Thanks

Re: Why does my print Have holes?

I do agree your filament have the Moisture issues and Food dehydrators is a good idea. You can keep your opened filament with this Renewable Mini Dehumidifier in any air tight container to keep them dry. Once these Renewable Mini Dehumidifier absorb enough moisture, you simply plug them in wall plug overnight so that you can reuse again.

I think you also need to find the best temperature (try something lower) for red colors after dried the filament, the issue seems to be more than just moisture in filament but the optimal temperature can be off with moisture in the filament. I don't know if Makerbot allows different nozzle temperature but worth check it out. different color of filament usually have different optimal temperature, and black usually but not always need higher temperature than other colors.
