Topic: Freeware collection

As I'm preparing to go operational with my 3d printing setup, I'm increasingly bewildered by the variety and capabilities of 3d freeware out there, and wonder what the best 'collection' of freeware might be, for a beginner at least.

I intend to take pre-existing .stl files, convert them to something editable (like .obj), edit them, verify their integrity, and do whatever else it takes to generate a file my printer can use. Do you have a group of favorite freewares for this sort of application? How do they fit into your work flow? I'd like to hear as much as I can on this.

Re: Freeware collection

Blender can edit stl files directly, no need to convert them to anything else

Meshmixer can also edit stl files directly.

Both of these programs are free
