Topic: Printing phone case.

Hi guys i want to design some phone case for my phone (xiaomi) but i cant find any .stl file for my xiaomi phone. Im afraid after i printed the design out the size can’t matched with my phone. Do you have any suggestion what scanner should i buy? and how its work? i prefer the low budgeted one thanks big_smile

Re: Printing phone case.

be cheaper to buy a good caliper, take some measurements and model it up yourself

Re: Printing phone case.

All a scanner would do is let you scan the phone which would give you a negative form to use as a subtraction on modeling software but that is it. You should also know that even if you scan a phone you will still need to account for filament shrinkage and the X and dimension variations on your printer. Even the most tuned printer is off by .02mm or so from design to what is printed. A stock machine is usually even worse. So the chances are very high your first several models will be too large or too small on one or more of the axis. Like others said it would be cheaper to get a set of calipers and measure the phone and such and make the design from scratch. Adjustments would be easier then as well.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Printing phone case.

Scanners also require software manipulation . A good scanner cost way more than a 3d printer . they are not a magic wand.

Re: Printing phone case.

Design some cases? It means you have a 3D software, so you can buy a caliper, measure the dimensions from your Xiaomi phones,
or search some drawings online as ref., then you can design and print a prototype, update it, complete it as I did.
You only need a scanner for some models you couldn't measure.
