Topic: DIY DLP Printer

I just wanted to share a few photos of a SLA printer I have been building to add to our services offered. It still needs some minor redesign, new leadscrews, some parts need to be milled out of aluminum and the case finished. I hope to convert it to a UV LED-LCD using either a 10.1 or 12.5 inch screen and a 100-150w 395-405nm LED array. It was made using a spare chassis from our R-530 printer, leftover makerslide and just random parts I had laying around. The spare parts used influenced the whole design. The prints shown are using Makerjuice G+, now I am using FTD Snow White which is a million times better. If you are considering building a DLP printer and have any questions fire away.

I am converting the machine to a UV LED/LCD printer to get a larger print area, higher xy res, and more even lighting. Here is the 144W 400-405nm array almost complete.

Re: DIY DLP Printer

What LCD panel do you plan on using (size & resolution).  I was recently talking to a gentleman that had used a 14" 2560x1440 panel from Lenovo, and the UV light pretty much killed it after about 250-300 hours of print time.

Is anyone making panels that are impervious to UV light?

He used a much smaller array of lights, but with a large reflector to distribute the light.

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...

Re: DIY DLP Printer

I'm using a 10.1" LCD 2560x1600. It should be 85 microns xy resolution. I have been doing a ton of reading on opensla, the google+ group, and from what I have read the LCD will be destroyed but 300hrs seems like that screen went really quickly. It may depend on the wavelength of light used. I believe that around the 360nm range the light will degrade the LCD much faster then what I am using. I am hoping to get a similar usage out of it as I would from a projector bulb but that probably won't happen. Replacement screens are $55 from aliexpress so that not a bad price. It is all experimental for me but I haven't read about the screens dying from UV yet on the D7 or Proniks KDL printers.

I am probably going to have to use some collimating lenses or someway to diffuse the light more evenly. Proniks just released a 8.9" model with only 6 10w leds. The light seems uneven so I really want to see some photos of those prints once users on opensla start publishing them.

Here is the LCD I purchased but have not received yet.

Re: DIY DLP Printer

I did this print a while ago for some photos but still have to get a good camera. I believe YSB from the forums posted this STL years ago.

Re: DIY DLP Printer

DLP light is much more harsh on an LCD than a UV LED array is. The DLP puts out much more short range UV along with others which is what has the bleaching effect. THE UV array put out a specific long range and it does not bleach if at all.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

How does a UV LED/LCD printer conversion work? Is it like building your own LCD UV projector?
