Topic: 3D Scanning

Hey, what are you guys thoughts on 3D scanning? Do they work? Do you like them?

There are a lot of free good ones out there like David-3d and 123D, but they require a lot of manual picture taking and setups. A lot of the laser scanners require the object to be reflective and detailed, i.e. if the object is black, shinny, or has no features, it might be hard for the program to reconstruct the geometry.

Has anyone had good/bad experience with that?

3D scanners are great for shapes that are convex, but what about shapes with deep holes? or what about seeing inside the object? Wouldn't it be nice to scan an assembled object and then print a copy assembled?

Do you feel like you would be more interested in scanning a 3D object if it were easy or try to model it yourself on the computer?

Re: 3D Scanning

I will being doing a post soon on my David 3D setup in the projects section. Should answer some of your questions for my type of setup at least.

123Catch does work.   You take about 50 photographs of your object, while walking around it SLOWLY.  Best results if the background is textured, so that the software can tell where you are.  Best results if the object also has a textured surface.  The resulting mesh is recognizable, but you still have to tweak it a bit.  Since this is free, it is worth playing with.  Depends on the object you are trying to scan.

Re: 3D Scanning

The reconstructme app works pretty well... I haven't had much luck on things larger than a couple of people or smaller than a coffee cup, but some really accurate scans otherwise.  I use the kinect for my scanning.  I am interested in the David 3d setup as I've heard really good things.

Re: 3D Scanning

Figured it would be a good time to start a wiki on this topic.

Filled it out with some general info.

I'd be really interested to read about your setup as I have tried using david scan several time with different setups and could never really get it to work right.

Re: 3D Scanning

I have recorded several short videos. One stuffed up and I have to do it again but after that I'll slap them together and upload.

Re: 3D Scanning

I've seen a couple nice setups involving a Kinect or a Playstation 3 camera. I'll probably attempt one of these at some point myself. With the other options being software based I see no reason not to try those as well.

Re: 3D Scanning

I've been playing with designing a scanner like the FabScan (http://hci.rwth-aachen.de/fabscan) with a line laser, a webcam, and a turntable (total cost of materials <100$). All the mechanical supports are printed with the SD2... It works quite nicely with a very nice resolution for objects that are in the range 2-20cm. Now I added a second laser to get better acquisition of some features, so I have to rethink my setup and rewrite the software. When I have something good to show, I'll post some results and share the wealth smile In the meantime, I leave you with a teaser:

I used a projector and david laser scanner.

Re: 3D Scanning

I've just ordered a Kinect sensor to expand on my Davidscan setup and was wondering what people were using with it. From this thread and others Reconstruct Me is a favourite ($300). I've recently come across Skanect ($100):

Any others?

Re: 3D Scanning

I am really in on using the Kenect sensor as well.
And there is a good comparison-test between them and there are many waiting for the release of KinectFusion.

This guy seemed to do a good work using Catch123D, and I will try that as well.

The previously mentioned ReconstructMe uses the KinectFusion research and offers a free version for personal use. KinectFusion has also been implemented in the PCL project, although that's more just for developers.

Re: 3D Scanning

I hooked my Kinect to my PC last night and did a few scans with Reconstructme. I have a lot of work to do to get a good scan from it but it is easy to use. I attached one of my first scans in an STL. It didn't pick up the detail I wanted so I will experiment more.

Re: 3D Scanning

Interesting, this kind of quality is what I would expect.
I wonder though what could be achieved by using the clip-on-zoom-lens

http://www.ign.com/articles/2011/09/10/ … ect-review

Would it be better or worse?

Re: 3D Scanning

The gallery posts on their site look significantly better. Some indicated they were using the zoom and that seemed to help a lot. I will continue to perform some trial scanning since my printer is down and waiting on parts. I hope to increase the quality so I can print a personalized wedding cake topper for my daughter's wedding in June.

Re: 3D Scanning

nop... the niko zoom didn't work (ask me why i know it wink ) ... you need to use "reading glasses" on your kinect to improve the quality at short range

edit : see this

http://reconstructme.net/2012/03/26/rec … h-glasses/

for information the niko zoom is a wide angle lens.. you need a zoom lens... the standard is to use +2.5 dioptre reading glasses

How long did you hold it place or how quickly did you move it? The scan should improve the longer it has to view the detail. The original MS KinectFusion paper this was based on was scanning a Dell logo only 1-2mm thick so it should be fairly good given the time to average out the errors.

Re: 3D Scanning

Thanks for the info. I will slow down my scan. I had the Kinect mounted on a table and I turned around in a chair slowly in front of the Kinect. I may have turned too fast. I will pause after each move.
