Topic: XYZ Filament - Huge price drop.

Hey to all XYZ printer users. I know a lot of people like to hack the printers to use other brands (cost wise). However I was quite happy with the approx £33 posted per refill, but did wonder if I start to do a lot of prints if I could get a cheaper price. The reason I was happy with the price was the features -  I like knowing how much filament has been used, I like the fact I can drop the refill in and it just works also. Oh and yea its tested obviously to work with the printer. I've had great results and even better ones once I calibrated the printer myself.

now recently the best prices (I've been keeping track) were on Amazon and Ebuyer. Just the other week Ebuyer only had red, blue, black and white in stock at £34 approx inc VAT. The other day I noticed a big change. They must have bought in Bulk or XYZ have price dropped to be more competitive and return people from hacking the printers as the price now is fantastic I believe.

Not 100% sure if it is a deal or not but they have them now for £23.98 per cartridge. Pretty good price really, also with the contained units they have better anti oxidising protection from moisture. They have 6 colours in currently.

I know its still more per roll than others, but I personally like the benefits of how the system works, I know its not everyone's cup of tea but there are lots of pros/cons to both ways of looking at it, but i still wanted to share the prices with others as its 30% cheaper now.

Not to burst your bubble but the issue is the amount you get in a cartridge. An XYZ cartridge contains 600 grams for any of those prices you mentioned.

Any other third party brand contains 1 kilogram per spool for prices ranging from 15 USD to 40 USD depending on brand. That still puts XYZ at twice the cost since you have to buy two carts to equal what you get with others.

Re: XYZ Filament - Huge price drop.

Yea I know its 600g per roll and most are 1kg. But regardless it's still a 30% price drop over what it was, so either way its still cheaper.  You still also get benefits from using the cartridge. Not everyone wants to hack things up, change code/firmware/use other software, mess around with temperatures, extruder, build platform temps etc. People still want to just stuff the filament in and print with no issues. So far I've not had a single issue with the filament or settings. No different that Refilled ink cartridges principle. When I wanted a great print I used new ones, when it was just standard daily stuff not a job I used refilled. Stuff over here in the UK is pretty high regardless so a 30% drop, so cheaper.

I just had a look, other filaments here in UK price wise. Amazon UK (some if buying singularly will have postage on top also). All below are per KG except XYZ. Cost per gram by the side.

PrimaABS = £21.90 = 2.2p
Unbranded - £19.95 = 2p
NUGUS - £20.99 = 2.1p
UKEOL £16.29 = 1.6p
PrintMe - £18 = 1.8p
XYZ - £23.99 = 4p
XYZ previous price £33 = 5.5p

So still shows it costs more as you said and I knew but its still dropped by a fairly large chunk per Gram of filament. I suspect as adoption increases the prices will still come down a bit more also. But again I cant stress enough that I and I'm sure many others don't mind paying that little bit more for having the positive features as mentioned.

Re: XYZ Filament - Huge price drop.

Personally, I wouldn't call it a "huge" price drop...

sure, it is a little cheaper than it was, but in comparison to other brands, it is still more than double the cost per gram.

as for "benefits" of using the cartridge system? um, yeah, ok, if it works for you, that is great, but for most of us here - not so much.

RH, and probably others too, will tell you how much filament is being used for a given print after slicing. not that hard to track if you are so inclined. I personally dont see the need to track since I can see my roll and tell at a glance if I am running low or not.

as for quality - there are plenty of quality suppliers out there at less than half the cost... With a greater variety of colors, too - XYZ offers 12 colors in ABS... I have a choice of 19 colors in ABS alone at Octave... have never had a problem with Octave brand ABS.

and XYZ offers only 1 color in PLA?? what the heck? Monoprice has 11 colors of basic PLA... plus more in the "premium" category... again, never had a problem with Monoprice PLA... both work just fine in my printers.

just my 0.02 cents worth... actual value: 0.000001 cent... smile

Re: XYZ Filament - Huge price drop.

Personally, I am curious as to how well the cartridges protect the filament. I doubt the seal is close to air-tight, and the issue isn't oxidization of the abs, it's moisture. If I had the time/money/inclination, I'd get some XYZ cartridges and some bulk filament and see how much moisture they actually suck up over time by weight. Since I don't have an XYZ printer, I really can't say.

Do they put desiccant in their cartridges? That would actually be an awesome idea.

Yes there is a desiccant pack in the cart near one and only hole that the filament feeds from. They should offer a high level of moisture protection.

That's a pro for the cartridges, then. You don't need to find a dry place to put the rolls. I'm seriously considering storing mine in a gun safe since I need a new one for my firearms and any good firearm safe will have a dryer on the inside to protect the guns from pitting and corrosion.

Re: XYZ Filament - Huge price drop.

a gun safe is a bit of overkill... These: http://www.amazon.com/Ziploc-WeatherShi … containers
work really well with a can of Damp Rid in them. One container will hold up to 12 spools of filament, depending on their size. we currently have 6 spools of Monoprice PLA and 6 spools of Octave ABS in one container.

See, I know that but I want to use the filament as an excuse to buy a bigger safe. The only problem is that if I had people over for a 3d printing party (it has happened) they would also need access to my guns.

maybe I should buy TWO safes......
