Topic: 12V - Missing!!

Printers' been working OK for a while, so I figured I'd try to clean up some of the wires and extraneous BS hanging out of the back.  Finally found some connectors, and had at it... (probably should have left well enough alone!!

From the pic - 12v input OK.  12v out at each of the 8 connectors OK.  Added nothing new, just wire clean-up.  NONE of the 6 fans work!  The small buss bar runs off it's own PS.  The printer works fine - bed and extruder temps come up, motors move things around like they are supposed to, but not a fan works!
It's evident my soldering capability has waned some, but my age and 2 strokes last year might have something to do with that.  The buss is not shorted anywhere, it's mounted on standoffs.
This has erked me enough, where tomorrow, I will get some ring connectors and insulated studs, I have numerous computer power supplies 350 - 400W and I'll redneck it back together....

Just thought I'd throw it out and see if there is a simple fix, or some dumb thing I forgot......

Thanx for any help!

The case is connected to ground for safety in the event of a short to mains. So by using a metal screw and stand off you are putting the 12 volts directly to ground.

Re: 12V - Missing!!

That was one of my first thoughts, so I metered everything again. The center traces of the buss are connected to nothing.  I tried it with the buss hanging by the power supply lines, touching nothing - same results.  Besides, I believe if it was shorted to ground, I probably wouldn't have 12v anywhere. I might have a little smoke tho....
The only thing I can figure is the PS is possibly going/gone belly up.  I only have a simple meter and can read not much more than DCV & continuity.

Re: 12V - Missing!!

Is there a secret to these type of connectors.  I had ordered a few of them, and used them on all the new connections.  I just wired one to the meter, plugged it into the buss and turned on the 12V.  No power.  Had power coming into the buss, which is hanging free of anything and no power out.

Think I'll go get some well needed beauty rest and tackle this again tomorrow.

I'm gonna use a 400W PS tomorrow, so if it is shorted, at least I'll see the smoke......

Can we get a picture of the back of that buss? We won't judge your soldering, promise..

Re: 12V - Missing!!

Is it possible you have the polarity reversed?  Those fans won't work if it is.

Re: 12V - Missing!!

I'm back - sorry it took so long - just got off work...The polarity thing may be the problem!  Could have sworn I followed it thru - guess not.
Anyhoo...  The first pic is the home made buss back.  The second is what I'm going back to.  Had a similar setup prior to me schooching with it, but this time I'll use spade clips for a little neater fix.

Would have liked to have had the 'simple' plug-ins, but the terminal strip will work.  It's all coming apart again very soon for Lawsy's carriages; linear bearings and new shafts, also have a couple more ball bearings to install - and some kind of nice paint rather than bare metal.
Thanx for the help.
If it wasn't for this forum & people, this contraption would have been disassembled and flattened in the driveway a year ago!!

Re: 12V - Missing!!

Looks like you have polarity switched.

If you look at 1st picture in OP you Have + on top and - on bottom (BASED ON plugged in cable)

If you look at the back of the Board looks like you have - on top and + on bottom

Sorry cant post pictures from work.

Re: 12V - Missing!!

let me clarify...  The back right side looks reversed. but the Back Left looks OK

Re: 12V - Missing!!

I think if you were to take one side - either - and rotate it around, they 'should' be the same.
If you face the pin openings, pos - red - is on the left....   If you look at the first pic, pos is pin 1 on all 8 plugs.

I'm redoing it now with a selective tie-in.  Color means nothing - whichever way the fan works is the right way!!

(I hope)

Re: 12V - Missing!!

Your polarity on the PCB version is swapped at the connectors versus the fans. you could just pop the pins out of the housing on the fan wire and swap them so they would match you connectors on the bus. Or just swap the wires red and black on the power supply and just remember you goofed and for that connection red is ground and power is black.

Re: 12V - Missing!!

I thought of that AFTER I had pretty much disassembled everything!  I went with the shorted barrier strip and the spade clips.  There was some joy in Muddville, until I clogged the nozzle trying to re-level the deck.  All the fans work.  The noisiest one is the 30mm E3D one!
I got it apart now, and will heat-blast the nozzle tomorrow. This is only the second time in probably 7 or 8 months that I've clogged it up.  I clogged and destroyed the original SD extruder 3 times in the first month...
So,it's still a learning experience.

Again - Thanx for the help!!  I'm sure I'll be back.....

Re: 12V - Missing!!

Yes you do.  Planes & boats now.  When the kids were still here, there were a few cars and such - I remember a Wild Willy.....  Most of my friends like to see how fast they can bore holes in the sky.  Give me 10 or 12ft of glider a Hi-Start & a six-pak and I'm good for at least an afternoon....

I've been out of touch for some 28 years!  The bug is still there!  I have a Bird of Time full kit waiting, and a few unflown electric jobs........  Looking at finally retiring for real this May or so - health & finances permitting, I'll be on the flight line!

Never do that, bad practice, you will forget you did this.
