Re: LCD question

It all depends on your definition of 'noob' smile

what are your capabilities?  ie.. soldering, electronics experience, etc...

Re: LCD question

The Viki, when it is released.   It finished Kickstarter and is suppose to ship at the end of the month.   There's no wiring and assembly required of the panel itself.  You will just need to solder the headers it will plug into on the board.

Re: LCD question

Viki seems to be the winner here,  panelolu isn't a hard install just needs wiring. The hardest aspect id say is soldering headers and the new chip. Either way you go you will need to do this.

Re: LCD question

Thanks for the advice.  I can solder, and I've reflashed my solidoodle.  I just didn't want to do any custom programming.

Re: LCD question

You will have to dig through the firmware and activate the lcd/sd card. But isn't anything somebody with basic computer skills couldn't do.

Re: LCD question

The panelolu is easy to put together, but I can't for the life of me understand why it doesn't arrive wired and ready to use!

The viki is 9/10 assembled. And probably easier to install.

Re: LCD question

The EASIEST lcd to install?

A $50 used laptop on ebay.

I use my old one with a cracked screen, and I access it remotely with logmein.com.

Technically, an SD card might be SLIGHTLY better in terms of data transmission...but repetier has never really had USB speed problems for me.

Re: LCD question

The SD is really easy by itself, you only need to add one pair of headers.  I use it for long prints since it's more reliable and I would be more mad about ruining a 5 hour print that a 90 minute print.  I'm getting a Viki mostly because it's cool and easier to travel to a meetup.   I don't see how it could compare to a laptop for convenience.  Also the laptop plays Pandora and reads Soliforum.
