Topic: I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves meee...

HAY GUIZ.

I'm a senior at Arizona State, majoring in Design Studies with an emphasis in Digital Culture and a focus on 3D Design and Digital Fabrication Techniques (Basically, just a fancy-sounding title for a design degree that makes engineering drop-outs feel better about themselves). Haha!!

Anyway, I love the prospect of holding something tangible you made yourself on the computer. 3D Printing just sounded like the way to go. I have a small Etsy shop where I put my meager drawing skills to work, and with the money I made, I gots myself my very own Solidoodle 3.

THE END. :]

So you're the one that made money on etsy, I heard rumors about that.

Ohz...? What sort of rumors, pray tell? Heheh, it's nice to meet you, by the way. :]

Hi there. I'm also a senior as ASU, Graphic Design. Someone came up from the digital lab the other day and was telling me about some guy who was talking about his 3D printer. That wouldn't happen to be you would it? Were you an engineering student first or a design student before switching to design studies? Also, I'd love to see your Etsy shop, could you post a link?

Whoa!! Small world!! It may have been me; I don't exactly know a whole lot of other people who have 3D printers. And I was an engineering student before switching my major -- to Digital Culture, which is like a happy middle ground between the concrete math/science side of engineering and the artsy/creative side of design. One of the best decisions I ever made. Haha!!

Hworgh!!! Sorry, for this. But if you just type "Draconic Designs" on Etsy's search bar, it should bring up my shop. For some reason, I can't successfully post links here. Always get the message "Too more links in message. Allowed 0 links. Reduce number of links and post it again."

My first major investment was a plotter machine that made very specific cuts for me, which I use to make vinyl decals out of sketches I do for people. Being the nerd I am, they're mostly Pokémon for the Nintendo 3DS, but I do take requests and resize them for other devices as well. :3

Re: I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves meee...

It seems that we may have 3 or 4 people with 3D printers soon at ASU (probably more considering all the engineering students that might have them). After the Dimension printer in the Digital Lab went down one of the managers came and asked me about my printer. It seems they might also be getting a small print farm of solidoodles or ultimakers to replace it.

I was looking into surface cutters about a year ago for some graphic stuff, which one do you have if you don't mind me asking? It seems you're doing pretty well on Etsy, I only managed to sell one single item back when I had an account. I might try making some 3D prints to sell now if I have enough machine time. I'm really liking that pikachu apple decal.

Can't wait to see the Solidoodle 3, that 512" build area is going to be really nice.

Haha, that sounds like our Fab Lab in Stauffer B. Things always only working when they feel like. Although the 3D printer in there is a ZCorp that uses adhesive and powder rather than extruded plastic. And none of the professors trust us enough to use it (smart), so we put our models on a queue if we want something printed -- which, of course, takes forever. Another contributing reason for my being in the 3D Printer market.

The plotter I have is called the Vinyl Express R Series (19" cut width) from Sign Warehouse. Of course, it specifically cuts for vinyl decorations, but with the right backing, I got it to cut other sheet materials as well. The entire starter bundle is going on Amazon for $200, which makes ME sad, because I got the same thing for about $350, but eh. If you're still in the market, this is the best time of year for buying stuff. Lol

Well if you haven't been in the College of Design South Digital lab you should go. After all, it's only like 100 feet away from Stauffer. We have a couple of zCorps down there that are working fine. You can bring your models down there to print any time. Prices for the zCorp vary depending on the model (things like resolution and material used). It's run more like a business though, so the printers are always available and all of the staff knows how to work them. I don't know what happened to the Dimension, but I'm glad to see it go. You could buy a Solidoodle 2 for every two rolls of dimension filament. It's such a gross rip-off.

I know exactly how you feel about having equipment and not being able to use it. The shop in CDN has a waterjet cutter and a cnc mill, but because of some bullshit with OSHA we're not allowed to use either of them. They literally just sit there all day powered down. They didn't even put water in the waterjet cutter for the longest time.

You might suggest that your professors request training for students for the zCorp from the folks in our lab. They're not hard to operate, but you do need a bit of training.

Ah, well... it's quite the opposite in the DC Fab Lab. It's not always open and since we recently got a huge makeover in faculty & staff, not everyone knows how to work everything, but as a result, they might be willing to print stuff out for you for free. And free is awesome. It's pretty great, but occasionally, when it's closed or the laser cutter decides to go on strike, we use the lab in CDN. I do agree, though, it can get pretty pricey regardless of the print or location.

I also got a chance to tour the shop under CDN last year. They did demonstrate the waterjet cutter for us, which was pretty awesome. They did mention, though, that the shop might still be undergoing renovations (or something), so that's why they prefer not to use much of the heavy machinery. I'm sure if you talk to the right professors, they can arrange something. I know some 3D Tools and certain Drawing professors have access to it and know how to use it.

It's good to see some more 3D printers in Arizona!  I live in Scottsdale and just got my Solidoodle, a month ago, although I just got it working lol  good Luck guys!
