Topic: dedicated support material

I was wondering what the difference is between dedicated support material (the light grey part in the picture below) and model material used as support material.

Re: dedicated support material

Dedicated support material is usually something that can be dissolved by a solvent that doesn't affect the model material, or melted away at a temperature lower than the model material's melting point.  A second extruder is required for the dedicated support material.

When using the same material for support, it is put down in a way to make it easier to pull away from the model.  Lower flow rates to make thinner, weaker lines, lower temperature so it doesn't bond well with the supported layers, loose fill pattern so it is easier to pick apart.

The picture I posted was of break-away dedicated support material.

It seems to be more brittle than the regular ABS but maybe it's just the same.

Re: dedicated support material

So I guess they have water soluble plastics that can be used as support...

Re: dedicated support material

What are the appropriate settings for support material in Skeinforge? I tried the following with poor results:

Support Flow Rate: 0.75
Support Gap over Perimeter Extrusion Width: 1.0
Support Material Choice: Everywhere
Support Minimum Angle: 46.0

I printed a figurine and almost the entire object had support material around it. It was impossible to remove the support without damaging the figure. I expected the support to only be visible around the areas that needed support (Chin, Arm, etc) Also, the support material did not break free easily from the object.
