Topic: Solidoodle Press not heating up

Hello all,
So I received my Press today and I was obviously ecstatic to finally get my hands on it. I followed along with the instructions and set up everything. The drivers didnt install automatically but through solidoodle's website I figured out how and then everything was connected and ready. My printer heated up and I was ready for my first print. It was during this print that everything went south. The filament snapped while the print was just beginning and then the printer started making a horridly loud grinding sound. Apparently the sound is common with the printer although I would have stopped the print during it if I hadn't already when the filament snapped(which was my fault for not checking how much was already hanging out after being preloaded). After the printer finally stopped(it took almost half a minute), I let it cool before I attempted to refill the filament and look into the grinding issue. I wouldn't get the chance to try and print again though as when I click heat printer, neither the bed nor extruder heats up in the slightest. Im not sure if something with the wiring went wrong literally during my first attempted print but as of now I'm stuck and have no idea what to do. I was hoping this day would go much smoother after all of that waiting but hopefully someone here can help me out or give me any suggestions as to why my printer isn't working. I've sent Solidoodle an email already a few hours earlier and have attempted to call them(no answer).

Re: Solidoodle Press not heating up

What was the source of the grinding sound?  Did wires get snagged up and pulled out?
Have you tried disconnecting the power and USB along with a reboot of your computer?

Re: Solidoodle Press not heating up

I've disconnected the power and usb at least 5 times each, and rebooted my computer a few times. The grinding sound I believe was the extruder running into the end of the y axis. I'm looking around for wires that might have gotten pulled out but so far I havent found any but I have a bad feeling that it probably is a wire that I can't see that is loose so I'll probably have to end up unscrewing things and digging further to find it.

When the machine is off, you can move the extruder to the middle of things.

There's a thumb screw on the extruder that wil take off the see through window.

From there, you should be able to see if the pinch wheel is turning.

Also, in soliprint, you can retract filament 50mm to get what's in the extruder out.

And don't forget to heat before extruding wink

Re: Solidoodle Press not heating up

I had some of the same problems but it was only the extruder not heating.
The grinding is likely the y axis (moving away from the front). The wiring bundle going to the extruder gets behind the carriage and stops it from hitting the limit switch so it keeps trying to drive it. I pulled the wiring bundle up and sort of "flipped" it. This fixed it.
The extruder (for me) was a lose connection. If you look at the power resistor wires from the extruder they have a clear insulation as they enter the wire covering. At the other end of the covering there are no such wires. This indicated a connector of some sort within. I pulled the cover back a bit from the extruder end and found the connector and sure enough it was loose. I remade the connection and it was fixed.
The build platform is separate wiring. It comes from the bottom.
