Topic: A better mousetrap

I live out in the country and mice are a problem, especially now that the weather is getting colder.
Rather than use "single use" traps I decided to try a technique my grandfather told me about.

The printed part is a simple spinner that gets loaded with bait.
The wire is #12 bailing wire and the bucket was one that cat litter came in (free to me).
The spinner is baited with peanut butter and the bucket filled with 2" or so of water.
Finally, a ramp is placed from the floor up to the lip of the bucket.

I set the trap Saturday evening and found four this morning.
Either I have lots of mice in the building or the trap works well....

So the mice get trapped in the litter box? I don't get it.

Re: A better mousetrap

Wait, you setup a trap to drown them? Geez....

Re: A better mousetrap

Re: A better mousetrap

If the bucket is big enough you don't have to drown them, make sure the bucket is deeper then 15 inches, then you can take them someplace and play catch and release.....lol I like the idea though.

Re: A better mousetrap

If you have ever fed a large snake in a feeding tank, after the first mouse/rat is eaten, the second will usually jump higher than you would ever think for their size.

Also, as far this being a "more humane" method of killing, this is false. Drowning is actually very brutal for the one suffering, especially with little or no naturally occurring current. To put this into perspective, many serial killers make their first kill via water to get their feet wet (no pun intended). The reason why is because it seems humane and easy to watch for those who are not going though it. Momentary struggle and panic with little or no vocal distress is what allows us to be comfortable with this technique psychologically.

Re: A better mousetrap

also some 'Mice' are actually Shrews which are much smarter and livelier plus they have a mild venomous bite.
caught 1 in my 'Katchall' windup metal traps once and it found a way out 4 times due to me not checking the trap soon as I heard ot snap. also I have 7 gallon plastic buckets near 20 inches deep and it could leap to the lip of it, lucky I had lid in hand. lol

I hope your wife doesn't read too much into my saying it's a mouse drown it or snap its neck with a trap.  So long as it's dead!  I hate mice.

@print3d- I wasn't trying to poo-poo your design in any way. I'm glad it is working for you as well as anyone else ridding an infestation. I've lived in the sticks, so I know all about it....only with more snakes smile
