Topic: 3rd Party Filament Plug and Play?

Hi all,

I am new to 3D printing. I have had my Da Vinci 1.0 for a month now and have upgraded to 1.2.3 then downgraded to 1.1J. I am using Simplify3d for software.

I am now ready to try 3rd party filaments. I am aware of the complexities of the cartridge, resetting length, etc. but I have other questions.

Other than finding a way to feed the filament is there anything else that needs to be done? Change the extrusion temps, slow down the extrusion speeds, etc?

I plan on using Octave, Voltivo or some other name brand filament. What else do I need to be aware of?

That is all trial and error. yes every brand and every color will require some variations in temp and maybe speed. Sometime even the same color form the same brand will require a variation when starting anew roll. You just have to try it and see how it looks then make changes if necessary.

What are the symptoms of needing a temperature that is different from the default value? Being a noob I have been using the default temp but if I can get better prints, even from the XYZ filament, I want to do so.

Rough irregular finish on top layers, layers not laying evenly or showing gaps on sides. If you have buldges on the sides then your temp could be too high. Also if the extrusion looks frosty then you are running too fast for the temp and need to change one.

I use Sainsmart and the black prints well at 210/90 and white 230/90.
