Topic: A new old 3D artform is catching on more now.

I have had requests for a topic on this not so new of 3D art form becoming more

prominent in commercial use lately. which I myself have used both in my Hobby accessory

manufacturing for home use and sales. as well as in business with a friend of mines local

lighting company. I will start with some basics of this very cool art forms materials.

Plexiglas, Polycarbonate, Plexiglas®, Acrylic, Lexan Etc. are all just brands of plastic

material usually sold in sheets for windows that dont break as easy as glass. among

other uses including bullet proof windows and light/sun filtering.

all have their own blend of chemical make up for specific proposes, some of these have an

ability for an art form using edge lit or even face lit ability to glow where they have had

carved letters or frosted into the sheet or rod if its an extruded shape (similar to how fiber

optics do).

some like Lexan can have colors mixed into the material during manufacture that will tint

the "glass" if you wil. so any white lite is directed onto its edge or face the carved areas

glow in those colors nearly  as bright as Neon lighting. making many artistic possibilities

for its use.

some Acrylics can do similar effects mostly from edge lighting but for colors other than a

kind of Aqua you must use colored edge lighting which may be better used for such

things as a sign with lettering or logo etched into it that you want to change colors by just

changing LED colors on edge lit sign. or like EXIT signs that need lit either red or green

depending on local laws.

also some of these materials are used for something called 'relief carving' art. which I also

do albeit in sub miniature size ;^)

I will try to get some pictures of my work in this posted soon as I can make an edge

lighting base to put them on and get some Macro closeups with a tiny known object for

scale reference. (I have some N scale 1/160 house hold items like a 20gal fish aquarium,

microwave oven with Turkey inside, table lamp with shade etc). most people that use

these art-forms do much larger items and commercial signs etc. LED lighting has

advanced a lot lately also making this art-form more popular to add to that market.

if you search/Google key words for images like "edge lit Lexan signs" "relief carving

acrylic" etc you can see some samples of use. also the power drink of a couple years not

called "Monster" uses this on their coolers to attract attention with claw marks in it that

glow green.

some of these materials are becoming available for extrusion 3D printers also plus a CNC

mill can do some of this or a laser device like used to make designs in a cube of acrylic

sold in gift shops.

Re: A new old 3D artform is catching on more now.

Now you're just teasing me wink Pictures and step by step instructions PLEASE.
A video of engraving Acrylic (available locally for me) would be awesome!
So I could use multi color LEDs to change the colors to what ever I want and the only part that would light up is the engraved portion?

I meant of the actual engraving process it doesn't have to be art.  Any time I get near acrylic it cracks or chips.  There must be some technique to prevent that.   I just thought that since you've done this before you might have some pointers.

Re: A new old 3D artform is catching on more now.

oh what I use is a Dremel with a homemade bit made from a piece of wire from a motorcycle hand brake cable about 2 inches long with a point ground on tip. when it spins at over 20,000RPMs it kind of melts away the plastic. allowing me to carve out the inside of an 1/8" sheet through the edge so I can cut bits of the sheet into size of object like the N scale fish aquarium and work from bottom and back of it to make fish and coral etc then paint them from inside cared holes with a single hair of fine paint brush then paint background land some of bottom leaving a few clear spots like on back side of coral etc for an white LED or fiber optic to illuminate it from underside or top like most aquariums and it can sit in window view of an N scale structure and look real in dim lighting of train room. same for other items just leave a side that is not exposed, unpainted to for edge lighting. one guy even used this technique to make an operating train layout inside an N scale hobby shop window.

Re: A new old 3D artform is catching on more now.

I also have an old Dremel Pantograph mounted on plywood Sears used to sell for making scaled up or down engraved signs by tracing pattern with a stylice while the Dremel is moved at other end of apperatice. this is how you engrave plastic sheets etc with logo using engraving and router bits.

Post some of your pics when you try it out...

And the Pantograph idea below sounds good for something quick to work from a photo or line art...

Re: A new old 3D artform is catching on more now.

yeah Sears sold the Pantograph kit for $30 like 15 years ago you had to furnish board to mount it on with a guide edge to line up item to trace and fasten it down so it didnt move same for material being engraved. it had 3 different holes with thumb screws in rods to set scaling ratios.

found some online for routers but no place shows mine. maybe I should make and sell some like it. its a very simple design with 1 mounting point and I have it on a 2'x4' board making it easy to set on desk to use then hang on wall to store. stands about 3 inches high at highest point from board un like homemade wood versions. router types go for $45-$60. have to look at it closer now lol

Re: A new old 3D artform is catching on more now.

it just looks like a thick needle with about a 60 degrees coned tip I sharpened into it while spinning it in Dremel chuck on a wet stone.

LOL I need to go to my work room in Basement with camera and take tons of pics for this thread. looks like. yeah I been making my own tools when none are available for decades. guess I thought everybody did. I found like 35 years ago when using a 30,000RPM Dremel moto tool that standard cutting/drilling accessories just dont work at such speeds, some even explode violently at the slightest bind and fly laps around the room with no regard to damage done to anything in their path.

also anyone that uses Dremel tools needs to watch for used model 395 and buy em up. as thats the last of the tough Dremels that fit most accessories over the years. also I have like a dozen of the Dremel tool adapter rings/collars that must be used when mounting some models into accessories and since Dremel has discontinued all old parts I plan to make stl files of those plastic rings. dont know if I remember what size is for what but if ya got the whole set then your good.

OK got some pics to go with this and another topic on casting molds on this site.

first for the Acrylic work I do cant find my tiny carving bit yet or N scale lamp for pics maybe later I also use wire gauge orifice drills. the N scale fish aquarium and microwave with turkey which can both be lit from bottom/edge and storage box for the micro items like N scale car lot flags, fruit, crates, appliances, tomb stones etc.

Re: A new old 3D artform is catching on more now.

my metal molder factory. also have spares not pictured. all of them can run at same time on same plug due to only 2 watt heaters in units, total amps during use of 14 molders was max 3 Amps at 115 volts. this toy and the non toxic low temp (174f) metal alloy refills was discontinued in 1995 due not to hazards but the metal has mostly Indium which is only mined in 1 place world wide yet all flat screen plasma/LCD TVs/monitors use it meaning demand overwhelmed supply driving cost up much higher than Silver which is a precious metal opposed to non precious alloy. but I have amassed a large supply through old toy sales, yard sales etc. even if I had to buy from supplier at current rate, items I sell will still make a profit.

some pics of my molds box show factory molds in dif colors and my homemade molds in clear, redish and maybe black.
heres some other things made. if interested I can add pics of my other formats I manufacture in like; rubber (thingmakers) plastic injector molds using soft waxy plastic, VacUformer, shape changing (strange change machine), shrink a dinks, Mattel and Toymax made most these toys originally from the 60s, 70s and 90s.

more info to come as I get time between Dr apointments, holidys and working on 3D printer stuff.
