Topic: Filaments and Brands!

So far I have tried (Most from microcenter my local store)

XYZ carts White is good, Purpin is horrible if any sanding is required (changed from a fussy purple to a pink with blocked of white everywhere not fixable with acetone or sanding. Also had a few popping issues (little dot gaps). it is a great color and can only withstand very light touchup.

Toner Plastics so far best overall, Prints well at lower temps 220-230c and their filament seems stronger (tangled bended and didn't snap right away test) Grey is on the lighter side their light green is awesome and sanding doesn't seem to leave a white hue that is permanent. reacts well to acetone.

The inland brand blew me away ... 14.99 a kilo ... so far their natural is amazing at this price! and i printed a almost paper thin vase with slicer spiral setting which produced a watertight iridescent fragile but usable vase.recommended temps are 220-260c ... been printing at 230-235 but going to give a few test runs at 220-222c ... The weather really affects everything so lately its been driving me insane.

The orange is on the lighter side and leave a slight hue when sanded but acetone is able to correct this without leaving any blotching. The filament feels harder and less flexible. Failed the tangled and bent test quicker than Toner and XYZ.

I have a XYZ vivid sky blue, it's was called vuril or vigilante? coming in as well as other colors from inland to Toner ... will try to keep you guys updated with pics. been busy btwn work and which has become more work than play constantly fixing from sensors malfunctioning on longer prints.

The last Is a roll of translucent/clear from hatchbox off of amazon, $15 for half a kilo. Horrible compared to everyone else. I'm going to assume it's due to the compound or the lack of it. most fragile out of the bunch also most sensitive to humidity? if printing with infill shouldn't be a problem. Printing vases the inland natural seemed best overall.

I would like to try makerbot pumpkin but can't get myself to shell out that much when wasting so much filament learning the ropes. FEEL FREE to send me a roll!

note to all, BUY as much as you can digest at any given time when there of TONER first followed by Inland. 200 bucks and you'll have a crayola box of filament at your disposal within your arsenal.

I still try to buy XYZ but the Purpin really pissed me off. I purchased thinking stocking stuffers ... now looking for another shade.

While i cannot promise there will be pictures posted soon I can promise there will be pictures.

Please feel free to add to this thread!

PS. I was duh duh and purchased a Leonardo board to reboot my carts, why you ask? Because my printer is a Da Vinci!

I almost banged my head against the wall when the sketch wouldn't boot the cart! then I found a post about it not being compatible. OMGoodness it was false!. (but you should've seen my face ... two hours of defeat until i realized it's the same board has to be the schematics.)

If you have a LEONARDO BOARD ... all you have to do is swap pin 7 to 6 and that it. I WASTED over 4 Hours looking through the sketch ... re soldering new leads trying different carts until i bricked one and realized there was something wrong. that wasn't code and or hardware. SERIOUSLY all i had to do was pop it out of 7 and put it in 6. You had to see the solder jobS... flat and flawless. over and over.

Re: Filaments and Brands!

Is TONER PLASTICS the Microcenter house brand?  I just got a flyer and it said they had filament for $15/kilo.  If its any good, Ill start buying that and refilling my XYZ cartridges.

Hey Rawk,

Toner Plastics is the 18.99-19.99 roll, the inland is 15 a kilo which is great. Toner is more flexible, The Inland is stiffer. I highly reccomend both.

if you look at the pic, the grey prints are toner, the orange and natural are inland. The inland natural has been great. Just printed some tricopter arms out of them came out stiff and precise.

Cool thanks for the tips.  Interesting that one is stiffer than the other.

Re: Filaments and Brands!

Toner is better for prints and designs that would benefit from some give.
It also prefers lower temps, XYZ 212c - 222c . Keep the best at 90c max toner plastics seems more sensitive to high temps vs inland. The davinci extrudes more Toner Plastics than it does Inland, So finding the right temp, setting slicer to .9 extrusion and some patience should yield results.

I've recently been experiencing warping from one area on my prints, the warping occurs in the rear corner while it's in cool down mode. Any and all suggestion would be appreciated.

Re: Filaments and Brands!

I highly recommend ExcelFil.  Its more expensive, but its worth the money not to have to fiddle with bed adhesion like others and they provide the ideal printing temp for every color of their filament.  I get mine at cubicity.com which I believe is the only US carrier for it.
