Topic: Filawinder Problems

When I turn the filawinder on, the servo turns about 5 degrees in one direction.
I have tried switching the potentiometer pins, in case I soldered it incorrectly.
Then I checked the pot with a multimeter and it showed to be fine. I switched it out with several other pots I had (between 10k and 25k)

I then tried reflashing the default firmware (I believe 9a) but I kept getting a Compiling error from the code.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: Filawinder Problems

When you plug the Nano into USB, does it light up then, but not when it is on external power?  The compiling error might happen if you have the PID and QTR libraries installed in Arduino's library directory.  They are also included in the firmware folder, so having them in both places causes an error.  Take them out of the Library folder and see if it works.

If the Nano lights up on USB but not on board power, then there might be a problem with the board.  I power up each board after I plug the Nano in to make sure it lights up, so I'm not sure what might have happened between here and there.

If the Nano won't light up either way, I'll send a new one.

Re: Filawinder Problems

I'll try removing the libraries (I believe I have them installed from an earlier event)

The power light does turn on when disconnected from the board.
(See first photo)

The power light does not turn on when board plugged in and power switched on or off (You can see the PSU plugged in to the right)
(See 2nd)

The board does get very hot (way hot to touch, more than 70 C (in comparison to filastruder barrel) when switched on in the spot the rod is pointing to (See third)

I tried flashing the 9a.ino
I got this error... (View image)

Re: Filawinder Problems

Check the voltage between the VIN pin and the GND pin on the upper right corner of the Nano.  If there is 12v there, then the Nano is having some kind of trouble, maybe with its voltage regulator which I believe is under the spot you are pointing to.  If there is 0v, then there is a problem with the board getting power to the Nano.

Re: Filawinder Problems

I read a steady 11.15v-11.18v, so 12v on those two pins seem fine.

So you think from this information that it is a fried nano and the shield is fine?

Re: Filawinder Problems

So any thoughts?

Re: Filawinder Problems

Ok so I tried the new board and still nothing. I've linked some videos that hopefully help out. I can also send the board back if it isn't a problem.

Re: Filawinder Problems

Is the laser lighting up?  It gets its 5v power from the Nano, while the servo has its own separate supply.  There is a diode under the nano, the black cylinder with a line across it.  Is the line on the bottom edge?  There have been some boards with that diode put in backward, but I doubt that is the case since you seem to be getting power to the Nano since it heats up.

Re: Filawinder Problems

The laser does not light up and the diode is  pointing towards the usb port on the nano. (I assume your speaking of the D2 labeled diode on the shield.

Re: Filawinder Problems

I suppose I could send another shield+nano.  Maybe there is something about the shield that is killing the Nano, though I can't imagine what, since it seems to be getting 12v like it is supposed to.  Does the new one respond if you try to upload firmware?  Anything out of the ordinary about the power supply or where it is plugged in?

Re: Filawinder Problems

I feel bad about you sending those out, can I get an address so I can ship the shield + the nanos back to you to test yourself?

When I try flashing the nano with the "Bare minimum" firmware example, it kept giving me this error (same as old photo, but with new firmware...)

Re: Filawinder Problems

And I did attempt all serial ports (again as stated before, I have used arduinos previously) and attempted to upload the winder firmware to my Mega 2560 which worked. Too bad I cannot use that to replace the shield (it can work at larger power consumption). so atleast my computer is connecting to the arduinos properly. I also tried a handful of mini USB cables and they all worked (well the nano kept giving the same error)

Re: Filawinder Problems

Maybe I can send the electronics to you to see if they work with a different shield/nano pair or other part. (obviously not the hardware (no boards, bolts, etc))

I also tested the supply with a voltmeter, and got a steady 12v +- 0.10v
