Here's a video:

When I measure the filament with a caliper i get anywhere from 1.56mm to 1.67mm, is this because of the on going purge?

That's about 1.61 +/- .05mm, which apart from the slightly small diameter is a decent tolerance to be getting.  Make sure the floor you are extruding onto is clear enough for the filament to coil down freely, as that was the largest source of my diameter issues.  I've printed with 1.5 +/- .1mm in the past (after the initial purge!) and the prints came out well enough for me to not really notice a difference.

Are you extruding PLA or ABS?  Also make sure the filament has a clear space to coil under the table with the nozzle at the center of the circle.  If there are table legs or stuff under the table that get in the way, it will affect it.
