Topic: 3d printer...to CNC

ok... i have a SD2 3d printer that take dust...

i would like to convert it to a light CNC machine (think for light wood / foam / PCB)... so i will change the extruder to a spindle motor...

the controler is the basic ramps1.4 / mega 2560..

what software to use ? what firmware to use ?....  time to improve my google-fu...

add : https://github.com/pknoe3lh/cncgcodecontroller

software to transform CNC gcode to Reprap Gcode..

add : http://reprap.org/wiki/Cyclone_PCB_Factory

PCB factory reprap based, with marlin firmware.

Re: 3d printer...to CNC

Hey YSB,

If you want to to do that, I'm worried about the bed to be very fragile to handle material to be machined... And the 8 mm rods are kind of small to be able to maintain your spindle right when forcing against material.

Even if like you say, it will be for small stuff, it will be far more efforts that just a FDM nozle...

You'll have to mechanically reinforce the bed supports, and the XY carriage. Plus, it will not need all this Z depth for machining.

I would sell the SD2, and buy a 3040 on ebay to start with CNC router the good way...

But, if you want to do it for fun and challenge, than no reason to consider that, we should definitely try it!!

SD3, early 2013. Silicon 200W 8x8 heater bed, lawsy carriage on 8 mm hardened chrome shafts, E3D V6 and lawsy MK5 extruder, ATX 350 W PSU, Custom build plywood enclosure, azteeg x5 mini smothie firmware, with vikki 2 screen, fishing line conversion and pulley conversion, M5 Z rod. Calling it Gran'ma, going strong ! <3

Re: 3d printer...to CNC

i  read your comment with attention.... and i decided to mount a laser onto my SD2 instead..

hope the project will reach the goal... half the time... half the goal at this moment..

Yep, Laser is a good alternative !

You could even keep your FDM nozzle, and set the laser right beside it, and do an hybrid Laser / 3D printer... That sounds fun...

Just looked at the L-Cheapo ... And I'm sure there will be plenty of threads about it in a little bit on soliforum !!

This is great !
