Topic: How far from the nozzle should the end of the screw be?

As I'm reassembling my machine from its constipation, I realize now that I had maybe up to a few inches of space between the nozzle and the end of the feed screw.  Is this normal?  I can move parts around now before I bolt it all down to wood if that distance should be closer.

Can anybody attach a picture of what a properly assembled machine looks like, down the end where the coupler is?

The best way to measure it is how far the auger protrudes from the nipple, which should be about 1/4" of an inch with the thrust bearing compressed.

I don't have an easy way to remove the coupler from the iron pipe though.  I installed it with the twist of an angry god.  When I get it reassembled I'll attach a picture (if nobody else has) and maybe you can tell me if it looks right?

Measure from outside of coupler to tip of nipple, outside of coupler to tip of auger, subtract?

Pictures aren't very precise.

Ya but they help clarify, I am kinda confused with what you are saying. Of course I have not gotten my Filastruder assembled/working since I do not have a working 3D printer to print my nozzle (but I am close with my Two Up).

So I would like to see a picture.

Picture of what? If you are assembling for the first time, the auger should extend 1/4" beyond the end of the nipple with the thrust bearing fully compressed.

If you have already assembled and the pipe coupling is too tight to remove, you can measure the distances to the tip of the pipe nipple and the tip of the auger and subtract the two to find how much the auger is sticking out.

Wait print the nozzle?  Something seems off about that.  Hopper, maybe?

I was able to eyeball the screw to be about 1/4"-ish past the end of the pipe.  I have the band heater about 1/4" from the end of the coupler (by the nozzle), and the whole thing wrapped in 30ft of fiberglass header wrap to make an ugly-but-inch-thick insulative layer right up to [ahnold]the hoppah[/ahnold].  The last of my polyurethane is drying so I can get it reassembled soon.

Helping a buddy assemble another filastruder tonight smile

Cool. 1/4"-ish is definitely fine. I've run 1/4+ +/- 1/4" without issue. It seemed that the tip being flush with the nipple made tolerances slightly worse, but I didn't do enough testing to say that conclusively. Honestly I haven't had time to do much testing/R&D at all since this time last year, but I'm hoping that will change soon.
