Topic: Filawinder and ambient light conditions

Has anyone else had a hard time calibrating the light sensor when ambient light is high?  I have quite a bit of ambient light and its all positioned above and behind me, when trying to calibrate the light sensor my shadow moving is screwing the calibration up.  I can calibrate it and set it up in the dark and it works fine but thats really difficult.

Try turning the sensor 180 degrees so it faces the other way?

Yes I have tried that... it didn't seem to make any difference.  My next plan is to build a shield that shelters it.

I didn't put a cover over the sensor because it's a lot easier to get the loop started up higher and then let it drop into the sensor zone.  It's trickier, and takes longer to thread it under a cover and back up to the winder.  However you could calibrate it with a cover on, and then remove it until the filament is in the sensor zone and ready to switch to auto.

I was thinking about redrawing and printing the sensor mount and adding a wall around and above the sensor to block some of the light... hopefully this way I can shield enough ambient light while still being able to thread the loop above it and let it drop down....

Thoughts?

I've uploaded the current DXF of the laser cut pieces to thingiverse.  You could print the plates and recreate the laser cut version of the sensor mount in plastic.  It is 3 sides of a box, so it would be easy to make a lid for it.  Maybe add a hinge so it's easy to flip up while moving the loop into position, then flip it back down.

I elected to go a slightly different route... I have uploaded the stl of what I used for others who may find themselves in a similar situation.  This different guide combined with turning the sensor the other way appears to have fixed my problem.  I hope.  I only tried a small 5 minute test but its definitely improved the situation
