Topic: Upgrading PSU do i keep the barrel connector?

Hi!! my 1 month old hot end died few days ago...i just ordered an e3d direct hot end but then i find out i have to change the psu in order to power the e3d properly...i have one of the latest SD3 purchased in late november 2013...searching the forum i find out that many of you are using leds PSU (I would have linked it but seems like i'm not allowed to)..now i'm wondering if the stock barrel connector can stand 20a....some folks in an electronic shop told me it stands max 4a....can you please help me understand the correct steps in order to make all the above upgrades?? Thanks...
ps i beg your pardon for my poor english...(i'm italian..)

Re: Upgrading PSU do i keep the barrel connector?

For what it is worth, I've been looking at upgrading the power on my printrboard, and have considered lots of idea, but haven't settled on one for sure yet. All my ramblings can be found here:

I think I'm gonna keep the barrel connector, but run some additional wires to the mosfets (which are the main power suckers), I just haven't got up the nerve to do it yet :-).

I understand just some portion of what you say in your blog...I noticed you soldered some pins in the expansion ports...and the fan pins...other than that i missed some words here and there..hope my stock PSU will stand the 40w heater cartridge provided with the e3d....
As for the firmware updating process the instructions on the wiki are a little difficult to understand if your knew to this things...I don't know if I ever gonna make my SD to work again :-(....

You will get it working again.  Do not worry about the power supply... Yet.  Many users are running the E3D with their original power supply.  Until you get it installed you won't know if it's going to work.  That being said upgrading the PSU is a good idea as the stock PSU is at it's limit.

I managed to update the firmware with the new configuration for the thermistor and upped the maxtemp to 310C..hope to receive my e3d ASAP....in case what would you suggest? Should I cut the old psu cable and connect it to a new power supply (ie LEDs driver power supply) or join some wiring from the new psu to the heating bed and hotend lowering the load from the printrboard?? I'm a mechanical engineer so I might have written something incorrect electronically speaking!!

Re: Upgrading PSU do i keep the barrel connector?

You need to run your hot end from the board itself (Although.... as I rethink that statement).  The heated bed load could be removed from the board and redirected to a seperate PSU via relay.  Mine is direct to the wall outlet via an SSR (solid state relay).  There is no reason you couldn't do basically the same thing with an extra DC supply.  Then again if your going to do all of that you would just upgrade your power supply big_smile.  If anything you will have problems with the PSU connector on the board being able to carry the load.  Not the PSU being able to handle it.

ok assuming i'm moving to a new psu what would be the best choice for a SSR...should be 12v in 12v out at least 7A...right?

Re: Upgrading PSU do i keep the barrel connector?

If you upgrade the PSU there really is no advantage to using an SSR.  Unless for some reason you need to remove that load from the board and PSU.  Like in my case where the heat bed is absurdly large (500 watts).  So even if your thinking future upgrade of the bed heater you can add it and the SSR later.  The question of what type of relay depends on the application.  Switching voltage is 12V from the board. Then it's just a matter of how much your switching. In my case 120V and just over 4 amps.  So I just looked for an SSR that met my needs.

thanks...I want to remove the load from the board because the barrel connector will struggle standing more then 8-10 A...so the best choice would be adding a 12V DC (rated for 7-10A load) SSR at the heated bed controlled by the printrboard moving the load to another PSU input...Is that correct?
