Topic: Pronterface is working fine-should I be afraid to switch to Repetier?

Just got my printer and it is working fine with Pronterface/Skeinforge but have seen many say that Repetier/Slic3r is the way to go.

What are the risks involved in updating the firmware and switching to it?

I hate to start fixing something that is already working unless the risk is really low.

Thanks from a Noob! smile

I'm going on 2 months using skeinforge / pronterface on factory firmware.  No problems at all for my application.

The only problem seems to be with connecting to the board to update the firmware.  If you can't connect, the firmware doesn't change, so no risk.   The firmware itself is stable, we haven't seen any problems with it.

there is a lot of stl that didn't work well or not at all with slic3r .. like this one : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:32065

so, if you change for repetier, let skinforge near you...

Repetier comes with Slic3r and Skeinforge. If you can't get Slic3r to work, one click and it will use Skeinforge instead.

There are only advantages from switxhing to Repetier. It's a superior experience in every way.

Repetier is certainly a Solid program. We will be watching their progress as they move forward.

The developer is also responsive.  He added a couple of features that I requested to make it work better with the Solidoodle, related to having end stops at the Max coordinates rather than at 0,0.   If Solidoodle were to request an install package preconfigured for the S2, he might be open to that.

That's great to hear. We haven't had much luck with some other developers. Perhaps I will contact him soon.

i switched over following Ian's instructional videos and could not be happier , Repetier is so much better. just the way you can have it turn off heat when the print is finished was worth the switch.

Pronterface can do this, just with a little more work.

Ian, do you know the developer's e-mail? We would love to get in touch with them.

I've only contacted him through Github issues.  There may be contact info of some kind there.

We actually had great luck grabbing him through his blog. Very nice guy, I must say.
