Topic: Just got my printer, 2 questions about repetier and the glass bed

I have had my printer now for a whopping 4 days. I had 1st day prints with out any problems. Took my time and leveled the bed used the default software. Worked ok but it was a pain to position things on the print surface.

Now I have updated to repetier and started using Slic3r and I now have had some problems with the print sticking to the tape.

The default program with Skeinforge will put down a nice thick raft that keeps the print sticking to the tape. Slic3r seems to not have a Raft. Is there anyway to set one.

Since Slic3r seems to not have a raft I went over to Skeinforge in repetier to try my print. After I compiled my g-code it traversed really slowly and didn't lay down the same thick raft I had before. Are there setting I am missing to put down a raft?

Finally I am going to either get some glass or granite to print on. Leaning towards the glass. But I have no idea what size screw the z-axis is.

Yes I have been using hairspray.

I had problems with the print sticking to the kapton at first, but I went into Slicer and set the print speed for the first layer to 25% and everything now sticks perfectly

I will give that a try. I also picked up some glass at lunch today so I will give that a shot tomorrow morning.

With the glass is there a reason everyone clips all 4 edges? I figure maybe 2 clips can hold it in place. Also if you make some bumper type attachments to the bed you could probably get a way with just one.

So from what I can tell there is no raft option with slic3r?

2 clips work well enough if you are printing at .3 mm... I have had to do this several times on particularly large footprints... At .1 mm though, not using 4 clips can actually allow the glass to rock a tiny bit on the aluminum plate since none of the plates are absolutely perfectly flat... If you try doing the dial gauge calibration, you can actually see that leaving off one of the clips will affect the level of the bed and it can compress by even more than .1 mm.

Skeinforge bundled with Repetier is version 50, which is very different from 39, the one in the Solidoodle download.  In Repetier, click the Setup button by Skeinforge and point it to the Skeinforge.py in the Solidoodle directory.

In Slic3r, you can go to the advanced page of the Print Settings tab and set the first layer extrusion width to 200%.  This is like using a raft, by using an extra wide thread to get more surface contact with the bed.

Ok I feel special now. I was upset that the first pass that just clears the nozzle wasn't sticking wonderfully. Once that passes the rest of the model seems to stick like a champ. Now that I am past that point I will probably have more questions once its done printing.

Thanks for the help. The sudo raft is awesome.

Huge deal. The default filament dia was 3mm. Since I am running 1.65mm I was only dumping half the material. MUCH BETTER NOW!

We're glad you get everything working!
