Topic: Computer Systems to run large 3D structures

Can I get some advice on the kind of specs needed for a computer to run large 3D models of structures for 3D printing.

The structures will have 100,000+ rectangle units and trying to design this has crashed most (low end spec) computers I have thrown it at. Can anyone give me a rough idea? I'm assuming I need something with high CPU and GPU power, correct?

You definitively need good RAM too.  What program are you interacting the models with? A program that doesn't work too well with exasperate any problems.

From what i have found you need LOTS of good fast stable RAM.  While it is taking on the CPU it seems the RAM takes a much larger hit.  I work in a company with alot of engineers and have built (and am currently building) some boxes for them.  The desktops i run Lenovo ThinkStation with Xeon procs with 16g of RAM.  I have done several laptops that are Lenovo W530's with the i7 proc and they do pretty good.  Not quite as good as the desktops but they hold their own just fine.
