I have seen similar mechanics before... it is neat 
but directional compound error will get you in the end unless you add components to make it closed loop.

I think it might rotate around the smooth rod.
Therefore when you rotate the rod, the part travels up and down.
I have heaps of bearings sitting around, maybe I'll print one of these as a test.

looks like the bearings work like a thread on a nut because they are set at an angle/pitch
in the comments says it moves 1.8mm a revolution
im still unsure on how the bearings get a firm grip on the 8mm bar

heres a site that somewhat explains how it works. The issue is that if it slips which it will if it has to make a fast change or the load is to great.
