Topic: New mobo fan support?

So I just got my new solidoodle 3 in a little over a week ago and it has the new board on it.  At the top there are 2 pin holes that say fan.  Is that already setup so all I have to do is add the fan and it willbe able to use the fan on/off commands?  Right now I have it wired into the hear sink fan but it's on all the time.

Re: New mobo fan support?

The printrbot comes with a proper PWM fan by default so I would say yes.

Re: New mobo fan support?

Ok sorry you lost me. I'm totally new to all this. What does the solidoodle have to do with the printrbot?

Re: New mobo fan support?

The new motherboard is a rebadged Printrbot board called the Printrboard.

Looking at the schematics, if you mean the 2 through holes labbeled "Fan" circled in Red in the attached picture, then yes, you can attach headers to this and use it as a PWM'able G-Code Controlled Fan.

Re: New mobo fan support?

Thanks!  I couldn't find anywhere that sold pin headers or connectors for it (only really looked at radioshack) so I just soldered the wires in.  works as advertised wink

I did the same thing I stopped in radio shack last night and the guy looked at me like I was an alien when I told him what I wanted.  What happened to Radio Shack?  Cell Phones and burnouts.

Around here only certain Radio Shack's will carry components. Most are glorified cell phone kiosks, but there are a couple that still have the old component drawers...but even then the inventory is scarce.

E3D-v4 Hotend, MK5 carriage with round plastic wire conduit , 3/16" tempered glass,  Well nut, SureStepr SD8825 1/32 Extruder Driver, PowerEdge 2650 500W PS, QU-BD heated bed, circuit board fan, hinged plexiglass enclosure with plastic tray top. Other than that mostly stock SD3

Re: New mobo fan support?

Some Radio Shacks are carrying Arduino and components now. That would be the rack I would investigate.

Re: New mobo fan support?

I have Solidoodle 3 but the mother board is different than this one?

Where I should connect the fan and how?

You have an older board. The Sanguinololu.

That USB connector...

Re: New mobo fan support?

Lol. I was going to say something about that earlier but I didn't want him to touch it for fear of it breaking for good.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

The thread is very short and does not have enough information.

I stepped over the cable by mistake! I want to fix it but I am afraid I will break it!

Re: New mobo fan support?

Can  I use the method posted by Ian http://solidoodletips.wordpress.com/201 … ruder-fan/?

If yes, Where should I make the connection in the motherboard?

Yes, that should work.

Re: New mobo fan support?

I believe the answer to your question in the first post is yes.  The fan hack on the blog is for the Sanguinololu, and you say you have the new board which already has the fan pins.   The correct pin assignments are probably already configured in firmware by default for that board, so add headers, plug the fan in and see if Repetier will turn it on.

Re: New mobo fan support?

According to solidoodlesupport my board is old.

It is nice to know the fan hack on your blog should work, but since the diagram there is for different board I don't know where to connect the mosfet. There is nothing written in the board to show the connection place unlike the one in your blog.

18

Re: New mobo fan support?

Metaldrgn, please let me know if this works. I have the newer board as well and would like to add a fan if its that simple.

19

Re: New mobo fan support?

Your board is the new one, he was confused by you posting the picture of the old board and then saying it wasn't the one you have.  The old board (which the hack was for) doesn't have the fan pins up on top.  The biggest difference is the stepper drivers, where the motors plug in, are soldered to the board in the new one.  On the old board, those are mounted in sockets.

The picture you posted is the old board. See Ian Johnson's post above.

Re: New mobo fan support?

Sorry if I caused confusion. I meant that although my printer is Solidoodle 3 the board is different than the one posted by adrain.
The board that I have is the one I posted its picture which is different than both Adrian's and the one in the hack.

If I can use the hack with my board, can someone tell me where to make the connection? A picture with a red circle will be nice.

Re: New mobo fan support?

The board shown in the post about the hack may be blue, but it is the same board.   Look for the teardrop shape on your board above the white connectors on the right edge.  Some of the holes there will need to have the solder removed and headers added.  You only need 3, but I added them all while I was at it -

This was my board after I put the headers in.  Note the teardrop between the connectors and the headers for reference.

Re: New mobo fan support?

Thanks Ian.

I did not realize that my board was the same as the one in your hack because the picture was not of the entire board.

So now hopefully I understand the process.
I will buy one 40mm fan, mosfet, header and follow the instruction in the hack -including updating the firmware- to install the extruder fan.

Additionally, I will install a fan - 2 40mm fan?- for cooling the motherboard. This one I will connect to an external power supply. Or can I connect to the printer own power supply? can it take all that load?

I can now proceed and prepare for installing the fans.
Thanks for your patience and help.

Is there a wiki page with the fan installation? If not, maybe we should mock one up.

Re: New mobo fan support?

A Wiki page with the different boards and steps needed to add a fan for each one would be useful.
