Re: Makerscanner 3d scanner software

I never had great success with this... But no doubt I was doing it wrong.

On my list of 'when I get around to it', I'm considering getting a Kinect for Windows (not the Xbox one, tis important as Xbox models don't support 'near mode') and trying the "Official" Microsoft Kinect Fusion or ReconstructMe

Both seem to give much better Point Clouds without the hassling around required for MakerScanner (setting up the laser, measuring distances, making sure the top 25 pixels are flat, etc etc) and it isn't hugely more expensive in the scheme of things than a PS3-Eye + Line Laser + 20M's of Filament (to print the mounts/brackets).

Re: Makerscanner 3d scanner software

There are a couple of services that will return a point cloud from an upload of a bunch of images.  Autocad's 123Create is one and there is are online services such as this one http://www.my3dscanner.com.

I've had some success in getting models of fairly organic pieces out of these, but haven't printed anything yet.  Part of the problem I've had is trying to get hi resolution of large (e.g. 15" x 30") volumes...

Re: Makerscanner 3d scanner software

I've used 123Create and didn't find it particularly good.  The model it generates is not what you'd call overly accurate and in my trials contained a lot of bad mesh structure almost impossible to iron out to something truly useful.  This was a few months ago when it was first introduced so I'm not sure if some of it has been fixed at this point.  I'm also interested in the Kinect Fusion kit.

Re: Makerscanner 3d scanner software

I've scanned my Mom, my uncle, and my niece using Kinect fusion.  My computer does not have enough power to scan at full res but they come out recognizable for sure.

This was the other web-based site I had in mind :

It definitely takes some experimenting ...
